Re: wal mart is whats wrong with this country
Every time I go into a Wal Mart, it always seems to smell funny.
I don't go there any more.

Re: wal mart is whats wrong with this country
Whenever I go back to the US I generally stop in a Wal-Mart for one reason or another, and I almost always walk out without buying anything. Even if I find what I'm looking for (rare) it just doesn't seem worth waiting 12 hours in line to buy it.
Now Target, on the other hand... there's a store. Hello Kitty waffle iron for $12? Sign me up! They also believe in a little thing called cleaning over there, which I find pleasant...

Re: wal mart is whats wrong with this country
That's the beauty of living in big cities. I like going to visit places like Chicago because I know there is not a Wal-Mart within like 20 minutes of me.
In Louisville, there is a Wal-Mart every 20 miles or something like that, and every one of them is packed with obese Jabba the Hutt Hover-Round riding creatures of doom.

Re: wal mart is whats wrong with this country
I refuse to walk into a wal-mart. I dont care if it's cheaper. I'll go to the target near my house and other places.
Also, wal-mart does indeed have a distinct smell. It smells like personal shame and disgust.

Anyone foolish enough to buy horror films at walmart deserves what they get. http://blog.kiwitobes.com/?p=51This is pretty cool, it shows Walmarts growth over the years.

Re: wal mart is whats wrong with this country
IMO retailers should never be allowed to censor with possibly the exception of the sorts of paper covers you see on porn magazines in some markets. That's different from demanding that the content be changed per the retailer's "standards." People disagree with me a lot on this, citing the "family" need for entertainment that isn't full of profanity and violence, etc. As I see it, there's plenty of entertainment without all that such that it shouldn't be necessary to dictate to studios that they clean up existing content. In this case, c'mon. If the graphic that Scott is working on was originally anything like that poster, I suspect that Wal-Mart has already sold "worse," and moreover, that the art wouldn't bother *anyone* besides perhaps an extreme minority of a peculiar form of religious person that objects to anything scary. Unfortunately, the bottom line is such, given the dominance of chains like Wal-Mart and Blockbuster that "Hollywood" concedes, allowing for censored versions of their content and packaging. Despite being basically pro-capitalism, I find this sort of corporate strong-arming to be essentially un-American in spirit. Sorry if this sounds like urban elitism 'cause I'd feel the same way if I was still a suburban dude, but I find the prospect of walking into a Wal-Mart to be a lot scarier than any horror movie art. I know that many feel they serve a need in places where there aren't alternatives, but their cultural impact is ... not appreciated. /soapbox

Re: wal mart is whats wrong with this country
i guess i should clarify a little bit... wal-mart didn't say the studio should change anything, just that if the cover art stayed as is they wouldn't order their usual amount and what they did order would be stuck in with the normal 'new release' stuff. basically sales would be next to none on a title that already tanked at the box office.

Re: wal mart is whats wrong with this country
WalMart has always been an interesting monster from how they organize and stock their stores to how they run their business......... You have to remember that it is their store and if you want to sell something in it, it has to meet their standards. It is as simple as that. If it doesn't meet those standards, they won't carry the product. For example. a lot of merchandise they sell has to be able to be able to be sold off of a palate, so the owner of the merchandise has to set up their merchandise special just for WalMart to sell. Where that same product doesn't have to be set up that way for Target. It has never really bothered me that they ask to have art changed on packaging or have the movies edited in order to be sold in their store. I know that the original unedited version exists in other stores and I can always buy it there. I think that if I was selling a product and I wanted WalMart to carry it and they had issues with the content, I definitely would change it. The amount of product that I could sell to WalMart for them to distribute and sell in all of their stores would be huge. Therefore, if I wanted to make more money by tapping into that retail base, I would make the change.

Re: wal mart is whats wrong with this country
The original Shutter was pretty cool...didn't even know they re-made (read: ruined) it.
Wal Mart certainly IS what's wrong with this country, but not for any of the reasons I see in this thread so far.
