 New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
http://jimwoodring.blogspot.com/2008/05 ... jesus.htmlI'm imagining that the paint masking will be nothing short of nightmarish. Can't wait to see the finished product.

 Re: New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
lord, that one is insane.
I hope they do a great job with the paints because that'll make or break a sculpt like this (unless there's a monochrome version available).
I'd love to see some talented customizers take a crack at earlier Woodring toys. Given the mad popularity of Pollard, it saddens me that Dorbel & Mr. Bumper are neglected. Woodring's a genius.

 Re: New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
That's one heck of a complex kaijin! Obviously more to the taste of this board's members, but I like this so much more than those early 20th century style figures he did a couple of years ago. And yeah, he made it soooo easy to paint. I just wish I didn't see a bit of Jar-Jar in the eyes. Not Woodring's fault. I blame Uncle George.

Quote: early 20th century style figures are you talking about the little music gatchapons that were sold in Japan?

 Re: New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
yeah, they're characters from his comics.
Seen as "western vinyl" I would probably have little interest in them, but I've been a huge fan of his comics for ~15 years, so I'm biased.

 Re: New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
Nothing wrong with that! I dig that old "funny animal" style in animation and comics. I was just watching some ancient animated Jazz music shorts last night. Unintentional surrealism!

 Re: New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
Wow that teaser pic is intriguing. I can't wait to see what they do with paints on the sculpt. It certainly holds a lot of possibilities. I think it's giving the Vulcan salute with it's left "hand". Woodring also states it's part of a "Kaijin family cluster"...nice. Dean wrote: Nah, these guys. They are his aren't they? My "western toy memory" is getting foggy. They're cool, just not my thing. That's Frank, Pupshaw and Pushpaw. I have the black and white of them and like them better than the color versions.

 Re: New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
I've got a scant few woodring pieces, love and fear them all, but this new one puts 'em all in the shade! What a sculpt! Either a very simple color scheme or a total hand-paint? Anyone?

 Re: New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
Of all the western Artists takes on "Kaiju" Woodring continually shows that he understands or at least can ape the aesthetic very well and IMHO the Dorbel (and now these guys) put all the other western takes on kaiju to shame.
My only Woodring piece is the Dorbel, I scored one bagged w header for 10 bucks from a store going out of business long before I ever started liking Japanese Vinyl. Now that I'm learning more about this hobby the more impressed I am with Dorbel.

I love Woodring and Frank and Pupshaw and Pushpaw and all of the others.
New sculpt looks insane and can't wait to see it painted.
Also, I think Biskup is one of the few other Western artists, besides Woodring, that can do "kaiju" influenced toys.

Word, I think the mini drag especially is great in that it's got the look of those vintage hannah barberra toys that are completley off brand crude in comparison to the originals.

Yep, Woodring's a genius. Along with the charm of the Dorbels and the bizarro gene-spliced-streetsweeper Mr. Bumpers, let's not forget his Mantras ... I also liked his sets of Crazy and Imperial Newts, though they pretty much vanished without a ripple.

Dorbel is still one of my favorite toys and the giant pupshaw is still on my most wanted list.

 Re: New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
I've been wanting a Mantra for years. If anyone has one they'd care to part with, let me know. This new toy looks great, too. Can't wait to see it painted up.

Not guaranteeing you'll get it, but -- Do you have a preference?

Speaking of Woodring and all, if anyone checking this thread has one or 2 of his newts to spare I'd be interested. From pics I've seen they look like classics.

 Re: New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
NAH, it was an edition of only 100 i think, tho. i may be wrong about the number but i know it was very limited. the only problem with these was that it was one of the first GIANT vinyls and therefore subject to the greatest flaw in vinyl in its inability to support much weight. The tails are very heavy, and over time, to put it in Jim Woodring's own words, "gives poor pupshaw the appearance of a prolapsed rectum." in other words, the tail tends to sink down with the weight, pulling the asshole down with it, so it doesn't loook very pretty from behind. i always keep him shoved in a corner somewheere, so that his tail has some support. even now, tho the tail is beginning to separate from the ring of plastic that holds it in place.

 Re: New Woodring/Presspop collaboration.
From what I remember, the large Pupshaw was a made to order toy. You had to submit an order form that was in the back of a Woodring book so I have no idea how many were made.
I remember being crushed that I missed my chance on ordering one. But since then, the smaller sets have come out and I'm happy with those, especially as space is always an issue and I had terrible luck with the large Biskup Ghonner.
