Ah well, looks like I hit a dead end ... Since Pogue's post referred to 'driv(ing) to SF,' I wondered if the Hull Building in Culver City hint was actually supposed to steer us to someplace in SF.

And, I learned that 716 Montgomery St. in SF was :
a) a former studio/residence of author Bret Harte and artists Ralph Stackpole and Diego Rivera / Frida Kahlo;
b) built originally from a hull of one of the many ships pushed up on what was then the shore at Montgomery St. and abandoned when its entire complement - passengers, crew and officers - all jumped ship, racing for the CA gold fields; and that
c) as a result of this history, 716 Montgomery in SF is not only the former home of all those artsy types, it is called the Hull Building.

So, I figured that the Culver City clue was just steering us to SF's own Hull Building. But nope, that's a dead end.

What can I say, it seemed like a good idea at the time ...

Now, you could fit everything I know about LA in my navel and still have room left over for Danny DeVito ... but my current thinking is that either a) some noted early geek was born in the Hull Building back when it served as a hospital, or b) it's some other movie credit. I think I remember reading somewhere that MGM Studios is right near this building, so it's probably been (uncredited) in a zillion movies over the years. I can hardly believe that the 'Flynn's Arcade' appearance is just a coincidence, but I think we have to assume now that it is ... Presumably they'd have told us by now if that was it.

As Brian's Hint 1b asked "Where have I seen that building before," a movie role seems most likely ... if so, someone with better visual memory than me is gonna have to dredge this one up out of their mental database.

Probably way off track but... the currant occupant of the Hull Building is a restaurant called Akasha.

Like I said probably has nothing to do with the 777 Aniversary but the search was fun.

As with any localized event, attendees have an advantage. However as a point of consideration, there were lucky bags left after last year's celebration which were put online (IIRC) the Sunday a.m. following the party. The staff consistently puts items not sold on event or opening nights up for sale on the Web to give those who can't attend a chance. It's true that Web customers don't get first pick but in several cases (e.g. the recent LeMerde show, the Kaiju Kollision show, etc.) excellent items "survive" event night. Some of the lucky bag items from last year's anniversary party were online for awhile afterwards, and last time I checked, at least one still was (the orange 6th anniversary Ghostfighter.)

In other words, don't despair in advance if you can't attend. Even if Koji's figure (or whatever surprises are in store) sells out, Skullbrain's Sell/Trade forum is the best "aftermarket" around, so there's always hope. This is a happy event. Seven years since S7 started as a "niche" magazine!
