Questions about my Paintwork "Step by Step Added"
Hey everyone,
I have been bombarded with questions and have not really answered many. It's hard to answer every single one regarding my paint and pinstriping techniques. Soooo, I going to try to use this post for all of you to ask the questions and i will do my best to answer them in a timely manner. I'm going to explain a few of them now.
I do not use HOK products, I use a german paint system "Standox" that is used for metal and plastics refinishing. It is partly automotive based but i use different raw dyes for transparents that i make myself. HOK is a great system when you don't mix it with other products.
My process requires a adhesion promoter after prepping the vinyl. This makes the final finish bulletproof. It is not brittle in any way.I use mostly full size spray equipment SATA brand . My airbrush rig consists of several iwata micron airbrushes. I use these because they can handle the harsh solvents i put through them. Everyone of my pieces is clear coated with a high solids finish with a flex agent added into it. I mostly use the gloss but i have the ability to adjust the gloss level for restoration work or something like that. I use metallic, pearl, tranparent, color change, etc. My pinstriping is done over the cured clear coat using 1 shot lettering enamel. I use this paint for all of my pinstriping and lettering work. I use any and every kind of pinstriping brush, lettering quill, etc. a Mack 00 pinstripe brush is a good one to start with. Learning to pinstripe is similar to learning how to play a musical instrument. When i get more time and if this post proves to be a point of interest to the skullbrainers then i will make the time a post pics of my brushes, airbrushes, shop layout, step by step, etc. I do teach pinstriping classes at different times per year at my shop in Mass and on the road. I am going to be at SDCC this year on wed night, thur, fri with a backpack full of my customs. If any of you would like to meet up with me and talk technique, see the finished product, etc. let me know. It would be cool if i could find someone willing to give me a spot for about an hour I could do a live pinstripe demo on on of my pieces. This I hope might explain the reason for my commi$$ion rates are what they are. This paint will kill your body and your pocket if you don't know what your doing. The liquids run into the hundreds of dollars and there is a shelf life. Painting kaiju is just a small piece in what my shop does to put food and diapers on the table. Hit me back with any more questions or comments you might have.
If you got this far "Thank you"
Matt
A Little step by step I recently completed.
Everything get cleaned and primed white then metallic silver applied.

I work from light to dark. I start with yellow transparent

I start adding green transparent over the yellow in areas I want

A close up showing that i use different shades of yellow to create realistic look, etc

.
I then add some transparent berry to certain areas

Rear View showing my progress

Hard to photo but color change flake is added and then clear coated with high solids clearcoat

A close up of the finished piece. The way I work is metallics bases with tranparents on top showning the meatallic all the way through.

The color wheel is the backbone to my color selections learn how to use one!!
