 disassembling Detolfs
I'm going to have to move to a new apt within 3 weeks. Here's my dilemma: Is it easy to disassemble Detolfs and move the glass pieces? Can the unit be moved as a whole (seems like they are held together by the weight of the glass and grooves in the wood)? I have two of these bad boys that need to be moved.
thanks Chris

 Re: disassembling Detolfs
My buddy wraps 'em up in pallet-style stretch wrap to move between events. You can get it from any Uhaul or moving store. Not sure if this helps, but I'd hate to disassemble a detolf.

 Re: disassembling Detolfs
I'd recommend taking them apart. They are heavy as hell and you don't want to stress the glass pieces.

 Re: disassembling Detolfs
call ikea and ask for a new allen wrench if you dont have it. it should count as a missing part

 Re: disassembling Detolfs
I've moved a detolf several times...it's a two man job...just take the shelves off, wrap it in a blanket and lay it down on the truck. Just be careful. No need to disassemble...

Doh!! You can buy a cheap allen wrench set from almost any hardware store that will have the size you need.

 Re: disassembling Detolfs
I've also moved 4 before in the same way. no shelves and wrapped in blankets.

 Re: disassembling Detolfs
I have moved 4 times with detolfs and I also find that the best advice is to take out the shelves, wrap them in plastic, and take a separate trip (detolfs only) to the new destination. It'll be one less stress when you move everything else. I didn't want my detolfs bumping against anything in the u-haul. Good luck with the new place!

 Re: disassembling Detolfs
I just moved 2 of them last month and now one of the doors doesn't close smoothly, it sticks really bad. I laid them down in the back of my truck and nothing happend to it that I can tell. Pieces of crap.

 Re: disassembling Detolfs
Thanks for the tips guys. So basically take the shelves out and move them as a whole unit separately seems to be the general consensus? I just know me and my g/f will be screaming at each that day

 Re: disassembling Detolfs
I don't like laying 'em down. If you can wedge them together & leave them upright, you'll avoid the misalignment problem. The hand truck is your friend!

 Re: disassembling Detolfs
