Hershy really is like eating wallpaper. Last time I was in L.A I was so pleased to discover a shop that sold all English sweets and chocolate- they even sold Ribena! It was the best thing ever until I saw the prices!

Sad but true. Ghirardelli chocolate (of SF) is a vast improvement over Hershey's ... but it just ain't in the same league with Valrhona or Callebaut. I read somewhere that Valrhona has an 'exclusive output' contract with some growers of the best beans - That is, Valrhona agrees in advance to buy every single bean that X farmer can produce, and he is barred from selling elsewhere. And there are some small-batch American chocolates that are worthwhile - Scharffen Berger is good.

Somehow, we have this tendency to take intense and exotic tropical flavors like coffee and chocolate, and by mass production drain them of everything which made them worth a damn in the first place - We reduce them to the simplest flavor/lowest common denominator that can even be recognized as 'coffee' or 'chocolate,' and can be grown most cheaply.
