Amen to Joy Division. But Ian Curtis died in his prime (musically speaking, that is.) But of those that are still alive & well (and creating new music, not just playing nostalgic concerts), I will go along w/ Nick Cave. Grinderman & Dig, Lazarus, Dig are proof of that!

I completely agree on the Walter Schreifels love. I have no greater hope at the moment than a Rival Schools US tour.

No mention of Carcass yet ? Aight, the first 4 tracks on the 'Symphonies Of Sickness' record still spell death/grind in capitals.

Dillinger Four!!! It may take them 6 years to put out new material, but when it's finally out it's always worth the wait.
Jawbreaker- Solid from beginning to end

Re: bands/musicians that stand the test of time
I hadn't discovered Joy Division until after they had turned into New Order. I disliked New Order and disliked Joy Division even more.. It was as unpopular an opinion among the Hipsters and trendy folks back then as it apparently is now..
My choices...
Siouxsie Sioux (all incarnations) - her recent solo is as strong as anything she did with the Banshees or the Creatures.
SMiths/Morrissey - Sure Morrissey's starting to look a little long in the tooth, but I stll enjoy his music.
Cake
The Pixies. (All of their albums are still in heavy rotation on my iPod.
The Cure. I still like their albums and continue to buy and enjoy them. I think disintegration was the last albm of theirs I really loved but they all still get much play in my iPod as well
