I see a difference between bootlegging figures that are in current production, and 'parody' bootlegs of vintage figures (e.g., Sucklord Star Wars and Microman bootlegs). The two positions are not irreconcilable to me.

The first is problematic because you can never draw the line once it's "ok"- can you cast an arm, a head, the whole figure? It's the same deal as with 'custom bootlegs' of existing figures. Even if you say that they will never leave your shelf, that's not an absolute guarantee that they won't make it out into general circulation one day in the future, even innocently. In a related instance, I remember a newer member was once selling customs from a member here on the BST, and he called them "handpaints" or something, which seems to imply that they are one-offs. That's highly misleading.

In contrast, you would probably never confuse Sucklord figures with the original. Unless they made Acroyear figures with D20 heads when I wasn't looking.

If you make it for yourself only, and you don't sell it, or don't give it away, you should be fine. You can do what you want to with your toys. Anything else, you should get permission first, otherwise you a treading in murky waters. As much as Rxh may be a company, it is still made by one man, Mori, and making copies of his figure would be like stealing from a friend and I would really recommend against it.

I think its fine as long as you don't sell it or if you only use it for random stuff, like the bottom of a detolf packed full of piled up bootlegs. This particular piece seems fine as you used it on a custom and didn't recast the whole thing and did one part for artistic reasons, if they didn't want people to use mediums they were comfortable customising with, they shouldn't have made figures for customising.

I guess its just where you personally draw the line, I am sure some people would say making a coke, b-man, tiffany or walder color would be bootlegging because you are taking their popularity/brand recognition to turn profit.

Why can't people just appreciate Japanese toys for Japanese toys versus trying to glom onto (to grab hold of : appropriate to oneself ) the companies? If people were creating their own unique sculpts, I'd respect them more.

No, not for painting. Custom painting is not an issue at all and never was. I don't think any toymaker would give a rip if someone repainted any of their toys. It's just a part of the hobby. In fact, some of the custom paints I've seen on this board, including yours, are much better than the originals.

But making resin casts of existing toys or parts of toys and things like that are a different story. If you want to modify a toy that way, either ask for permission first from the person who holds the rights or never post pictures of them in public places like this.

Also if you are replicating the look of a rare toy, I still think that is bad form and crossing the line. By replication, I mean painting a toy to resemble a rare stock figure. It's basically a bootleg.
