Post whats with all the resin toys
Do people really like this rise of resin toys.?...I personally think they suck and am kind of tired of seeing them,
kind of reminds me back when all these easy to use programs to make music came out...All kinds of people who have no business making music started putting out loads of shitty music and the level of quality goes down overall. I mean I really like the aesthetic of vinyl dolls with their......whats the word I am looking for....? Oh yeah, points of articulation. And most resin toys? come out very sloppy and crude and look like a plastic bong that got to close to a lighter......

thoughts on this anyone?

the DIY cruddiness is exactly what I like about them. most of them are shitty, sure, but most vinyl toys are shitty too.

If the artist I dig prefers resin for a canvass for his art--so be it. i.e. Le Merde.

The thing is, I don't consider Le Merde's as toys either---but I play with them every once in awhile. :D

It's just a different aesthetic. I also think that the opportunities it opens up to people who are interested in trying their hand at creating something is a good thing. Sure the outcome may or may not be successful, but the same goes for vinyl and/or any other creative endeavor.

Depends. It's all in the execution. It's not the medium that's crappy.

I don't have any resin sculpts but for me it depends on the figure and artist.

Post Re: whats with all the resin toys
the thing about up and coming artists that make resin toys: they can't be ALL you do. I'm vastly more interested in an artist's resin toy if I can see how it fits into the rest of their work. Even badly/sloppily made resin toys are appealing for their hand made quality. But it would be nice to see some resin pieces with a little more definition than some we've seen on here.

Making your own toy sounds great. Many young artists have seen guys their age making a career at toys. You've got to start with something. Please take a look at Itokin Park and where he is now. If you've known about his stuff for awhile, you'll remember his original home-made resin toys and all the photos in articles describing his work. The process of home-casting looks like a lot of fun. Seems pretty rewarding to have your own toy you cast and painted yourself.

P.S.- You'll see my crappy resin pieces in a few months.

Resin sucks in general. Its a hunk of crap that isn't even a toy.
What do you collect? Globs of shaped and painted resin, uhhhh why?

Le Merde seems to be a strong exception but I think his art translates well into resin and couldn't see it working in vinyl, do I consider it a toy or something I would collect, not at all.

Most of them just look like something from spencers gifts

itokin park, while not the norm...used to make resin toys that had articulation, and I'm not aware of any other work they've done but making toys? I could totally be wrong here about their work as a whole...but I've never seen surface based art and they seem mostly toy oriented if not solely.

While i agree with you for the most part it seems they don't fit the mold.

saying a toy has to be articulated is like saying art has to be made with paint

And there's no reason you couldn't make articulated resin figures... 8)

You're right about that as far as I know. But I guess since Itokin's been around since I started collecting a few years back, I don't really think of him as a new artist.

Well said. Plus if they suck they make good door stops, unlike sucky vinyl.

Personally, I have no problem with resin figures. What I have trouble with is classifying them as toys. They have a completely different character.

What I like about resin figures is they are pure DIY. Generally, the artist does the sculpt, casting & (sometimes) painting. Agreed, not everything is successful, but everything depends on the creator.

There are alot of people who think they can paint and draw that suck. Can't blame the medium.

Resins are homemade mixtapes and Sofuvi figures are limited vinyl singles. It's not like one sucks and the other one rules, one just takes a lot more time and money to produce so theoretically the people making them are more committed.

Well I just bought three new resins here at CC. a cool "Hater" figure from Jeremy "Lokash", a new Swampy Sludge Green Skater Dude from Le Merde, and a ton of new ONell Glycos. So I guess you could say I'm OK with resin.
While you guys continue the discussion on the merits of resin and articulation I gotta go get in line to pick up my custom Boggieman and later today the custom Itokin Park. There not resin! :D

Oh yeah... thanks, Bryce.

I heard that Gobon, Sarvos and the power-up accessories are coming as well- wonder if any were released at SDCC.

Just to clarify, the regular Onell Design stuff is mass-produced injection-molded PVC, not resin. Some of the add-ons they're doing like the Lamour Supreme heads are low-run resin items.

resin figs is great, takes away cash from collectors want to overbid me on vinyl.

...wondered for a while why toy collectors liked em so much.
some dont even look bad, but to me aesthetics seem to be quite different from vinyls.
