I think you may be right re: Sweeney Todd.

Is it just me, or does it seem a bit premature to have this listed already as a 'cult classic'. To me it hasn't had time yet to 'age' properly to have a cult following...then again, maybe since it's a Tim Burton movie its cult status is just presumed.

UnderBeit: The story of the demon barber of fleet street is much much older than Tim Burton's film. I saw a stage production of this in the early 90s and I think the story has been around since like the 60s or 70s. Its a classic and one of my favs.

Yes, I'm a big fan of Sondheim myself, but automatically assigning the musical's popularity and 'cult' status to the film at this point in the game seems odd to me. God knows 'Rent's musical theater cred didn't carry over to film and let's not even talk about the travesty of 'A Chorus Line -The Movie.' If the movie does attain cult status, and only time will tell, I'd say it wll have much more to do with the attachments of Tim Burton and Johny Depp than of it's Broadway roots.
