When I was 8 "Return of the Living Dead" scared me because you couldn't kill the zombies AT ALL. I thought "if that happens we're all SCREWED!"

Yeah, Goblin definitely created a spooky soundtrack to Suspiria. Hated the movie though. But that music... My wife has the soundtrack and every so often it'll pop up when she has her iPod on shuffle and driving around on a sunny afternoon the music can give me the creeps!

2000 Maniacs - not scary but it was very disturbing to me when i first saw it. It had the look of a snuff film and the way the townspeople seemed to take real sadistic pleasure in killing the victims made me think to myself "what kind of sick bastard could think up this stuff?" It had a "too real" quality to it which creeped me out big time.

Since then, I've actually met Herschell Gordon Lewis - he lives not far from me and writes a local column in a giveaway newspaper - he's a very intelligent, nice guy. I still can't reconcile how such a seemingly normal dude could have made this movie. Also, it blows my mind to think that this film was shown to audiences in the early 60's - long before people's tolerance for gore had been raised by a boatload of slasher films. I can't believe HGL wasn't arrested for showing this thing way back then.

black sabbath: the drop of water
scared the living hell out of me.

Suspiria- classic, full of lurking creeps and intense brutal violence
The Haunting- the ultimate ghost movie

Wizard of Oz- not sure why, but i'd rather not watch.... ever

Skylar and I got to meet Dario Argento last year in Toronto. He was super gentle and sweet. True story! I also took photos of him hugging George Romero.

Carrie.

Not the part at the very end where the hand pops up, that just surprised me, nor the blood and everything. What gave me the creeps was Carrie's mother and her crucifix. Her silent figure in the shadows as Carrie got home to clean up was eerie. The glowing eyes of that disturbing crucifix and the way her mother died I found terrifying when I first saw this movie. I still feel uneasy when I see those parts even now.

I want to make a "Lemon Party" joke here, but I respect those 2 too much to do it.

To me a scary movie is often what you don't see. It's suspense. Not a axe falling into a head. I'm hard pressed to think of a single movie that would still scare me. I wanted to say Pet Semetary, but I bet even that would not scare me now. Maybe the original Japanese version of Dark Water? So what movie scares my fellow skullbrainers?

...to me it would be horror movies with authentic "signature"
like last years australian crocodile movie "black water".

horror movies these days pretty much predictable, no?
one movie making a difference to me was ted bundy - serial killer.
authentic style that showed the perversity was too real for my taste:
for instance the way he killed without any emotions but also
showing him cry like a baby making u feel for him
together with detailed description before his execution
(filling up his ass with some kind of cement then putting in ass plug)
went too far for my taste - weird feelings for the rest of that saturday.
better not watched it.

Dagon is also a good (low budget) movie with a very Lovecraft based feel to it.

This is one of my very favorite HP Lovecraft movies, right up there with Re-Animator. (If memory serves, they were both directed by the same man, Stuart Gordon). A hapless couple becomes stranded in a small fishing village where all the villagers are gradually metamorphosizing (is that a word?) into sea creatures themselves.. No jump-out-of-your seat scares, just a moody and creepy atmosphere throughout.

I thought Dagon was a comedy? Sorry, I enjoyed it, but mainly for giggles.

+1 on Jaws, but only because I have some weird shark phobia. I have nightmares about swimming underwater and coming face to face with one of the toothy things.

Post Re: Scariest movie ever?
Stir of echos freaked me out when i first watched it. i havent seen it in years now though.

high tension was freaking awesome if you ask me, but there were a few things that really bugged me about it and i couldnt figure out... unless shes just really demented and cant even tell a straigh story which may be part of it.. idk. still great!

i was gonna mention last house on the left. that movie is absolutely a bugout. its too real and you can relate to it so easily. its COMPLETELY believable.

speaking about soundtracks i think Ravenous does a GREAT job of freaking you out with the music.

whats scary about leatherface is that hes so demented. but hes not even the most terrifying aspect of the movie. i mean we have a family in the middle of nowhere cooking their victims and selling their meat, they also team up to catch and kill these victims... i think its scarier to think about then to watch really.

and audition was good but i think ichi is more terrifying or at least creepy.

for a REAL scary movie go find "deliver us from evil" this movie will make you cringe.

That movie is indeed amazing and surely one of the best out there, although I wouldn't say scariest. Most highly recommended!

Since DON'T LOOK NOW, RINGU & TALE OF TWO SISTERS have already been mentioned I'd just like to add that RINGU definitely is one my most cherished horror memories ever - saw it on a non-subbed VHS, which only added to the experience...

Not exactly scary in a traditional way, but plain fucking disturbing and so relentless it made me cringe a couple of times: À L'INTÉRIEUR aka INSIDE.

I just watched this movie the Inside, the other day it was really intense, definitely watch it. Also this movie Frontiers is another more recent French movie that is pretty good, it's kind of like what I thought the remake of TCM should have been, rather than the sucky pile of shit it was.

The french are kicking some horror movie ass, I think they made this other fucked up movie to, I can't remember what it was called but some guy's car breaks down in a town full of only men. It has the creepiest dance scene I have ever seen.

ok, i don't know the name of the movie and i haven't seen it since i was like 8. but figuring in the fact that it creeped me out when 8 was enough to vividly remember a few scenes must me it ruled. maybe not scary, but i'd like to find some info on it. anyways, it was about this 2 kids that were playing in the woods behind there has and they found this deep pit in the ground with some crazy creature thing in it and they keep feeding it stuff, starting with raw meat from the freezer to little dead animals around the farm and eventually worked their way up to feeding the thing their babysitter!

btw, i still think that Buio Omega ranks up there with scariness/creepiness. I think the english title was Beyond the Darkness, but I may be mistaken. for sadistic scariness, I'd have to have the first couple installments of the Guinea Pig series (unearthedfilms.com or unearthed-films.com , i can't remember which it is at the moment). The whole story behind the first film in the series is always intriguing, how Charlie Sheen is a big horror buff and got his hands on a bootleg copy of this (since it was banned in many countries up until recently and reported it to the FBI thinking it was real and a 15 year investigation took place around it....
