Post Need advice: bank error in my favor.
I paid off a credit card recently about 4 weeks ago. When I make my online payments, it is always deducted from my bank account the next business day. It has yet to be taken out. I have already received my statement in the mail saying my balance is $0.00. It also shows $0.00 online. The error is just over 2K. For now I am just leaving the money in my bank account waiting for them to take it out anyday. What if they never do though? Should I just keep quiet or call them and tell them what happened? If this was an error that would be causing harm to an individual or family I would notify them immediately, but I could give a shit about a multi-billion dollar company.

Bet they can & will do harm to you as an individual or family.

Personally, I would assume they will catch it. Sounds like a delay on their part rather than an oversite.

You will get ping eventually, probably during a quarterly audit if they don't catch it yet.
Id fix it now before they take it later, that would suck to have it taken right before Xmas or your card get denied while shopping or on a trip!

Happened to me once. Don't worry, they'll catch it.

I won't be needing the card ever again, plus I am just leaving the money in my checking account. I'm not going to be stupid & assume I will get away with it & spend the money. I think I'm going to let it fly a year. If they haven't caught it by then I think I'm pretty much home free. I do know that legally they are certainly entitled to the money at any time when they realize the mistake, but what if they try & charge me interest on it? That's the only reason I am even fretting about it. It would suck for them to send me a bill in a year with a $400.00 interest charge.

They will catch it..so I'd let them know. And plus..I believe in karma...if you took it and ran and didn't say anything it'd come back to get you in some way.

Man. I wouldn't take the chance. Even after a year- they'll find it and take it back.

Here's what I have to say in the ways of karma. My Dad has prostate cancer, my ex-girlfriend who I am still close to has cervical cancer, my Sister had to put her dog, Goldie, of 13 years down this week, my own dog, Theo, is having kidney failure & doesn't have a lot of time left, my Sister & brother-in-law have been married 10 years & have 2 kids & are getting a divorce, etc. Could it be worse, sure it could always be worse, but maybe this is a situation where something good happens to me for once.

This has happened to 2 friends. One took the money and ran and one didn't. They caught it on both. One got penalized and it took forever for him to return the money. Better just take care of asap.

It's true they always catch it.

The fact that you ask seems to suggest that you know what is the 'right' thing to do.

not reporting an error like this is kind of the same as taking things without paying for them (or, exactly like taking things without paying for them, assuming your CC bill was for stuff purchased).

stealing from a giant corporate jerk is still stealing, whether it gets caught or not.

my two cents anyhow.

more likely it is just taking a little while to post to your account. my online bill paying usually takes a few days to appear in my online statement.

I will be contacting them tomorrow. What I honestly see happening is them taking the cash from my bank account twice & causing me to be overdrawn. I will fucking go irate on them if that ends up happening. When I call I'm going to ask for a manager from the get go just to avoid some bullshit.

Post Re: Need advice: bank error in my favor.
are you sure the account you are checking is the one you made the payment from? I only ask because the same thing happened to me once. Made a large payment which never cleared my bank. I also 'did the right thing' and called the company saying They had credited my payment but it hadn't cleared the bank. AFter many hours on the phone with the company and the bank I finally figured out I had paid it from my 'vacation fund' checking account and not my personal. embarassing.

To answer the question, though. yes you should call. These are the kinds of things that will eat at you (at least it would eat at me). They will discover the error and if the money's not there whenever it eventually goes through, you'll probably be penalized.

hmm the eternal question, is it ok to steal from a thief.

"it's ok because he did it first"
to this I would say no, because you might be causing a vicious circle.
or
"I am just taking back what is mine in the first place"
To the second quote I would say go ahead, it was yours to begin with just take it back.

So there is really two ways of looking at this conundrum.

I believe the statute of limitations (time they have to take action) is 2 years when dealing with financial institutions. If they have not caught it in the next 2 years your a free-bird. However def do not spend the dough because if it gets caught at any time within the 2 years, they will automatically debit your account (speaking from experience here) at that time and It can screw all kinds of financial things up for you.

I would notify the bank about it.

However, I would wait until Wednesday to do it. This way the transaction has a couple of more days to clear, and if it does, you don't have to make a call, and whoever you get on the phone before Wednesday is more likely to be an employee who's substituting for the regular personnel who are on vacation.
