Post Mac People-Processor updates avail on G5 powermac?
According to this site:

http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/mach ... owermac-g5

There are no upgrades available. I'm not sure if anyone knows more about it though.

Here are the guts of my machine, which is now 5 years old, and still my baby, but I would like to speed things up a bit.

If that's the top end G5 (which I highly doubt), then I don't see why you computer is slow. Dual 3.2GHz Quad cores and 32GB of mem is not slow by any means. Even the bottom end G5 at one 2.8GHz Quad core and 2GB RAM is pretty fast. What are you doing that you need more power? Art? Film/sound editing?

Did you look through various Mac forums?

I have the same one if its about 5 years old. I recently changed to a MBP and believe me its so much more faster when you work on high res photoshop files. Also when you have iTunes, Photoshop, Safari, Mail, Ai, Freehand on at the same time there is a huge difference.

I hear the new CS 4 coming out won't take non intel machines.

Yep, Adobe will NOT be supporting Power PC processors in CS4.

It's making my office mighty pissed.

That looks like a single 1.8 Ghz G5. You're corret. No processor upgrades out there for it.

I hear that CS4 primarily addresses performance issues. No major app inhancements.

Does that mean that Bridge will load and refresh faster than slumlord paint dries?

Missy, do you know if you have maxed out the RAM? That can speed things up tremendously. I think that machine can go up to 4GB, four 1 GB modules.

Not too difficult, I think this is what you're after:

I don't know. do you know how to find this out? sorry for being such a "beginner" i bought it so I didn't have to think much about it, i knew it would run well for a long time, but its starting to need a little TLC. I can't afford a new machine right now (not the one I want anyway!;)) but mostly want to make this run a little better if I can. How do I know how much RAM is in it?

I'm pretty sure if you go up the the little apple in the upper left and click on "About This Mac" it'll tell you all the specs you're looking for.

^^^ +1

I can tell from your pic that there appears to be empty RAM slots. But, go to the Apple menu and click on "About this Mac."

It will tell you what processor you have in there and the next line is the total memory on your G5. Click "more info," and then click the memory entry. This is what my MacBook Pro looks like. I have two slots, a 2GB module in each slot.

Here's the easy answer: sell the G5. Get an intel based Power PC or even a 24 " iMac with 4Gb ram. Take the hit, move up. I'm running an intel 24" iMac with only 2Gb ram. It runs CS3 effortlessly until I have an 11x14 original with more than 15 layers, heh. Trading up in Feb. after taxes. To be frugal, check the refurb sub-page on the apple site. I've purchased 5 computers that way over the years, it has always worked out.

That is absolutely correct, a 4-core or 8-core Intel Mac Pro (not called a G5 any more!) will run circles around an older G5, and yes, adding more RAM might help a wee little bit, but not too significantly unless you only have 1-2GB currently. 1-2GB is kind of holding the machine you have back, IMO, if that's all you've got in it. But best to get a new box. Also might want to wait for 1 or 2 more revisions to the Mac Pro, some of the Intel chips coming up on their roadmap are pretty freaking sick -- especially if you can hold out for the Nehalem platform which should hit end of 2008 or early 2009. Those puppies are a whole new architecture and should spank the current Core2Duo-based chips.

What version of OS X are you running? That can make a pretty big difference as well. 10.3 was kind of meh IMO, 10.5 is pretty solid stuff.

If you want you can send me your Apple System Profiler report, just PM me. Go tot he Apple Menu, About This Mac, and More Info. When that Profiler program pops up, go to File > Save As, and save as the default format. PM me for my email and you can fire it off to me, I'll take a peek and let you know what RAM or software upgrades might be a good idea. Don't worry Missy, it won't send me any interesting private information, unless you have some off applications installed with obviously strange names...

I am just waiting for Apple to design a smaller more space friendly machine. It's been so long and upgrading from a G5 to Mac Pro looks the bloody same.
