And that was basically the kind of response expected out of Eckotyper...

Nobody said you were a racist. All that was stated was that your abbreviation for Japanese is a racial slur regardless of how you intended its use. Try to keep up.

I'm a Human Resource Manager (Interviewing, Hire, Fire, write ups, investigations ect. ect.) and trust me, if an employee used that terminology to describe anything in the work place I would release them on the spot for gross misconduct (gross misconduct = no unemployment benefits) and violating the non verbal or bodily harm policy.
No matter how you spin it the comment was wrong, and should just be owned up to and apologized for. Very simple.

I don't think anyone is saying that Eckotyper used "Jap" maliciously... I think it was just used without knowledge that it's just offensive regardless of it's reference to specific people or objects. I'm hoping he'll take this as a lesson and learn that it's just not an acceptable term to throw out. Ever.

if you see me in person, you can call me a MEX all you want, because i have a brown skin tone, when i am actually mexican/portugese and see if i actually take offense to it... no i won't because i have thick skin.

i'm happy that you would take that kind of action if you indeed did hear that in your workplace. and that scenario doesn't actualyl work considering if we actually talking about the subject of this thread in person, instead of typing it on a message board, then I would of said japanese, rather then simply shortened it. I sometimes am browsing the net while at work, and typing my posts while working... so yes i do abreviate... the fact that you would even bring this up honestly is amazing... i could see if i was attacking someone and actually insulting them... but this is beyond belief... i find it funny how often the members of this board attack new members over anything they can.

No one is attacking you because you're new, you inadvertently used a phrase that can be taken as a racial slur. True, some were a bit aggressive, but most were just giving you a warning about the etiquette here.

All you had to do, whether you agreed or not, is said "Oh, sorry, won't do it again I'm a n00b LAWLZ!" and than thought to yourself "what a bunch of over sensitive douches" or whatever your personal opinion is on it. I just don't get why you'd fight it.

I don't think anyone thought you were using the term to offend someone, but after it was stated that it might why would you defend it? Why not be diplomatic and just apologize and move on instead?

Good Lord... what a douche.

It's not a matter of you being new, it's a matter of you just not getting that "Jap" is a racial slur. To my knowledge, "Mex" is not - not that I've ever heard anyone being called that as an insult or otherwise.

For example purposes only, the Latino equivalent would have been to refer to something as the "Spic version" and then justifying it by saying, hey "Spic" is just a contraction for "Hispanic". And to put in the context of the restaurant example I used earlier, I don't think anyone would get a good reaction going into a Mexican restaurant yelling "I love Spic food!".

This is a JAPANESE toy message board. Using the word "Jap" to describe toys is offensive even if you aren't calling a person a "Jap". This has been explained more than a few times in this thread - I'm not sure why you don't get it yet.

Just take this as a lesson that you should never type out "Jap" as a an abbreviation anywhere because it is an offensive term. Period.

"I'm sorry for inadvertantly using the word "Jap". I was at work and and had to type quickly. Please excuse my ignorance. It wont happen again. I appreciate your patience."

Cut and paste ecko. It's not that hard. But the fact that you don't understand why you have to apologize is probably why you keep defending your actions.

the reason i don't have to apoligize is it was not taken out of context like some are making it out to be...

your right... hows about if you see me, call me a "spic, wetback, gardener, dude that sells oranges on the side of the highway, etc." does that work for you?

honestly if one person thought that much about what i typed to respond to it, in a way it was not meant to be taken... they could of hit me with a pm, or what not...

just the fact that you think a apology is necessary, does not mean that one actually is... you've said your peace, i've said mine... leave it at that and move along.

Unbelievable... then you're a real douche. Wallow in your ignorance and determination to remain an offensive person. Perhaps we gave you too much credit that you actually might understand what was offensive. I think your responses have given us a pretty good idea of what kind of person you are.

Just FYI, but "Jap" was originally a derogatory term used during WWII to refer to the Japanese when they were being forced into internment camps. The sentiments connected with its usage make it considerably more offensive to people of Japanese ancestry than the 'average' racial slur.

I don't really care why or how you use it. It is offensive, and it's not a word that should be brought back into usage purely due to laziness.

Harassment: Refers to a wide spectrum of offensive behavior. When the term is used in a legal sense it refers to behaviors that are found threatening or disturbing, and beyond those that are sanctioned by society.

Yep. Resolved: Eckotyper = douche

At this point, I doubt there's any sincerity in anything Eckotyper posts from here on out on the subject. Anything he says now is going to be intentionally inflammatory. I have doubts anyone could actually be this stupid.

Hahahahahaha! XD

::SIGH::

I've seen these kinds of arguements. The weaker your position is the more anal retentive you become in responses.

It's kind of pointless at this point for other members to hammer the concept of having TACT to a person who is not listening. All this just confirms the nature of eckotyper's personality.
