 Re: KAWS Stormtrooper
In my opinion to all of Kaw’s “Art”, it’d showed his personal ‘FU’s” to the current pop culture trend be it in advertisements, commercials and cartoons. So when making the initial Vader, he is sending his personal FU’s and mocking the legions of Star Wars Fan’s, who would eventually buy anything and everything Lucasfilm endorsed merchandise. Just cause a ‘High’ profiled ‘Artist’ had his take on a well love character, is no reason to buy or support. I don’t see a trend that liked the Vader or trooper Mr Potato head.
S7 Stormtrooper is the ultimate Star Wars merchandise to own, I‘ve been waiting for one since I was a Kid.

 Re: KAWS Stormtrooper
Interesting SW tribute toy in a way but definately not mindblowing... Definately Kaws' take on pop culture as he 'always' does but the head sculpt looks really weird/uncomfortable.

 Re: KAWS Stormtrooper
like a lot of Kaws stuff this looks ok. For $25 or so it might be worth it. But this guy just gets under my skin. Way too much hype. One single idea and a tiny fraction of the talent of Anraku, Mori, Longneck, Shikaruna, Gargamel, etc.
In the end it just makes me sad to see this guy printing money when there are so many far greater toy "artists" out there who are completely unknown outside this board.

Anyone wanna bet that the next one will be Boba Fett? (although a Jabba bendy would be kinda neat)

 Re: KAWS Stormtrooper
when the Vader came out I was kind of hoping for a Yoda...the thing is, I doubt he'll do a Fett or Yoda because of the colors...but you never know. He said he was only going to do the Vader and then this happened, so maybe...
also, just from personal knowledge, the Vader (and now the Stormtrooper) is not even close to being an FU to Star Wars. He's a huge SW fan and worked really hard to get the license to do these...it comes from being a real fan AND having the pull to get Lucas to allow it.
I'm in no way a Kaws nut, but I do feel he's gotten a bad rap by people here lately. All the negative shit comes from other places, as he's still doing the same fucking thing he's done since the beginning...like most artists who become successful on some level, they stick to what sells or what they do "best." Like it or not, he has at least tried new stuff from time to time. He could have released dozens of colorways of the companions, but never did...unlike the artists we love and collect here.

Locomoco wrote: Anyone wanna bet that the next one will be Boba Fett? (although a Jabba bendy would be kinda neat) All I know is that if he does a snowtrooper...well, like I said. Gum for all! I agree that KAWS has gotten a bad rap. Honestly, he is the reason I collect JPN vinyl now. I started off with Kubricks, Star Wars mainly and then someone on KW posted a picture of the Dissected. My mind was blown, I couldn't believe how sick it was. It looked like a grown up Mickey Mouse cut in half. Haha. Then I searched KAWS and somehow ended up here, not KR. Scored a Dissected and posted some pictures here and well, here I am now. I just think that his style is sick. The same, sure. That's his style though and that's what I love about him. Simple, clean as fuck and consistant. I cannot wait to score this release and I hope he does more characters. I love Kaws! Okay, I'm done.

be cool if anyone on the trip who's also into this scores one for retail...a nice coincidence if it happens.

Obviously it doesn't work but at least they try. I don't think anyone has "flipper" imprinted on their IDs in Japan The checks are more to deter someone buying multiple figures. Bottomline is it fails miserably like Hank mentioned. The professional buying gangs have enough bodies out there to buy one each and still get enough for their stock. I once suggested to the OF folks to hold a simple quiz. Ask simple random questions about Kaws, eg, "Name 3 kaws figures", "How many colourways Dissected comes in" etc etc. This would at least get rid of all the homeless folks and foreign students. Or at least the buyers there have to get themselves educated on the toy they are buying into and do a little homework. No foolproof system and its always a sad sight at OF releases to see 90% of the figures going to greedy resellers.

 Re: KAWS Stormtrooper
The only OF only toy releases have been the Vader and now this. They can't release them in the US due to issues with the license. Medicom only has right in Japan and Medicom owns OF. If you mean clothes and stuff like that I agree. I wish more was offered on kawsone. I also wish they had my size. They haven't gotten one yet. I am so excited about the Stormtrooper. I don't have a Vader but I think if I can manage this how can I not be FORCED but to get a Vader?

Has it really only been those two? Wow. I am apparently lumping all of my Japanese only releases into one big bin....

There's some truth in this; certainly most artists have unifying themes/styles throughout their work--but the successful artists I like and respect have had more than one good idea. The fact that (for the most part) nobody cares about the other stuff Kaws has attempted is telling. Doing an endless line of "companion plus ___" variations is only slightly more interesting than dozens of colorways.
