Post UENO
I went to Ueno Park today with my son. It's the first time I've ever been over there. It was pretty nice and I found this one toy shop (Yamashiroya). It's kid of like Kiddyland if you've ever been there in Harajuku.

Here are a few shots from today:

The Rodin is tight. I'll definitely have to check that out next time I'm out there.

I really like Yamashiroya, you can find some great stuff hidden in there. Kiddy Land is fun and my wife digs a lot of the stuff (especially the Blythes), but there's usually not much there I'm into with the exception of maybe Fist of the North Star stuff. Yamashiroya, on the other hand, has a bunch of those tight Berserk statues that I'll never buy but love to look at and some cool figures from smaller Japanese labels that don't make it into other shops (like the Dehara stuff).

Dude, beautiful sculptures. I am completely blown away by them and the musoleum (think thats what it is) doors. Great shots man, looks like a very peacefull time you spent with your boy.

Post Re: UENO
That takes me back. Yamashiroya was the first toy store that I ever visited in Japan- I was 10 and staying in a hotel in the Ueno area with my family. It used to be way smaller with an even tighter staircase and no elevator that I can recall. They remodeled extensively in the late 90s/early 00s- even temporarily splitting the store between two area locations- before it became the larger store that you see today.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised to see Dehara stuff on one of the floors on my last visit. I think they added in a few floors during the remodeling...

Thanks for the photos, LD. Lots of good memories there. If you visit Japan, this is a must-see, in my opinion. Also Ameyoko (nearby) is a very interesting stop for clothes, food and other things at reasonable prices.

That is really kind of funny. I didn't even notice those figures until your post. I had to go back and see. I was on a field trip with my son and walked around the park with him and one of his friends, but when it was time to head over to the toy store I ended up with eight kids with me so I was pretty busy keeping my eyes on them.

My son really wants to go back again so I can get more info then.

Sorry!
