havingmysay wrote: i have not heard skeletonwitch, but i'm putting together my top ten of the year and up close to the top is the new Toxic Holocaust record. The record is a brilliant mix of thrash with some crusty punk.
other newer/newish bands that are good: thrash: Warbringer (think early Sepultura thrash done by white kids from Ventura) Fueled By Fire Hatchet Cross Examination (fun party thrash ala Municipal Waste)
death/grind: Decrepit Birth (Diminishing Between Worlds is awesome) Insect Warfare (stripped down grinding death metal) Pretty Little Flower (powerful shit) Hatred Surge (probably one of my favorites, one dude writes and records it all, no shitty drum machines or anything. i dont think he has anything out on cd, just vinyl right now)
most of the 'new breed' of death metal bands that are made up of these young kids i just cant get into. they just lack something. i can't get into all these kids trying to outdo each other technically. i like my death metal stripped down and no frills. the new Six Feet Under is actually pretty good. i love the new Obituary lp and ep. the new behemoth ep is great, their live show is awesome.
if i can think of more i'll update this. Insect Warfare Pretty Little Flower Hatred Surge where can i find those 3 at? *Edit* Nevermind. I'm checking these out right now. Found a couple of there myspaces

 Re: metal
on these grind albums i just wish i could hear them sing. i can barely hear what they are saying, like, the instruments is goes WAY louder than the voices, so its just like i'm hearing a instrumental. i just found Pig Destroyer though. And there nice! http://www.myspace.com/therealpigdestroyer

 Re: metal
turtletooth, I will second Scott's recommendation of Toxic Holocaust for some good new thrash. Also I totally agree with what you said about Amon Amarth's new album. It kicks so much ass.
Oh, & bannedindc as far as wanting to see Skeletonwitch live, do it if you get the chance. Saw them on Blackest of the Black. They were the first band of five & quite frankly put on the best performance. It was fucking awesome. You can tell they really give it their all. Also Leviathan by Mastodon is pretty fucking perfect. I really like Remission too, but Leviathan is always in constant rotation.

 Re: metal
One more thing: Corrupted just played SF twice recently. Bummed I didnt get to see them. I saw them once about 10 years ago in DC and it was the loudest, heaviest set ive ever seen. A friend got to see them at the shows here and said It was so loud and heavy he thought he may have blacked out during the set.

Leviathan was the only album of theirs I had until my recent visit to my cousin and her family - I got a copy of Blood Mountain (along with that Bison BC album) and after a few listens I really like it. That's what I was listening to when I drew the AIC comparison. But yeah, Leviathan rocks! Plus, I love Moby Dick. And that's NUTS that they're playing shows with only 3 members! There's no way to pull off their music with only 3 musicians - 4 would be tough enough!

I like Mastodon, but I think they're overrated.
It's good stuff, but I certainly don't think it's cream of the crop, satan's gift to metal or anything.
In fact, it's not even really what I initially think of when I think of "metal". None of that Relapse stuff really is.

 Re: metal
I've been checking out some of these recommendations. Thanks everyone and keep 'em coming if you think of anything else. Scott - Hatchet is great. Parka - Are Hail of Bullets a Nazi band? They sound good, but the whole Eastern Front theme made me a bit scetchy. Skylar - I'm not familiar with Lamb of God. Are the any good, or is your comparison a negative one? I'm still loving Skeletonwitch, despite the naysayers. Baptized in Flames is right up my (Satanic ) alley! They're playing in Jersey on Saturday, think I might check them out live.

lamb of god is a great band if you are looking for some straight forward, rocking metal.
edit: go sample some clips on itunes or their myspace.

 Re: metal
I've pretty much listened to nothing but Bison and Mastodon for the past week and a half. I kinda agree and kinda disagree about them not being metal. Metal is such a large genre that it easily encompasses what Mastodon is doing. But when I'm listening to it they sound like heavy prog rock - and I think that might be where your comment about them not being metal is coming from? For me it's kinda nice because I don't really hang out with anyone that listens to this, don't read any music magazines/blogs, and don't listen to the radio so I don't ever come across anything being overrated - it's all unrated to me! Things will only be overplayed because I overplay them.

I mean, Suffocation is on Relapse and I love them. But what I meant is that they also put out a lot of stuff that isn't necessarily like straight, genre specific metal. I think maybe I have somewhat of a different perception of things considering Relpase is from this area and so a lot of kids that aren't really into metal jump on that bandwagon and are like "I LOVE METAL!!!" and the only bands they like are Mastodon and Dillinger Escape Plan (both good bands). But neither are what I think of when I think of "metal", which basically means 80's thrash, mid to late 90's death metal, and then black metal. And those kids wouldn't touch a band like Incantation for instance with a 10 foot pole. I don't really like much outside of those 3 genres, and I'm not a big fan of how the banner of metal how now come to encompass all these other genres like stoner rock, noise, a lot of doom (there are a few bands I've come around on, but I don't like a lot of it), tons of disposable grind, the more mainstream symphonic black metal stuff, etc.

doom dates all the way back to Sabbath which IS the very essence of what metal is!
