Re: i remember a few people talking about bikes.
Ive been relegated to a rusty "Mamachari" living in Japan. Decent bikes are way tooooo expensive here and with the wetness, rust city and I dont have the time to care for them like I did living in SF. I miss my springer Schwinn cruiser and the MTBs I had.

Here is mine. Very convenient as I take the train everyday to go to work. Folded, you can still wheel it along. You don't need to carry it.

Re: i remember a few people talking about bikes.
Believe me there are dbs in any culture/scene/whatever and people that will drop insane amounts of money of fixed gear stuff - NJS approved this, Campagnolo Super Record that. I grew up with skateboarding, punk rock and hardcore and there is no less "uniform" and conformity in any of those cultures than any other. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6FggGhvviUI like all kinds of bikes. At the moment I've got a Santa Cruz Chameleon & a Cannondale CAAD 9-4. I was actually thinking about having something like a lower end Pake built up last week to have something to ride around and lock up. Wouldn't mind a Surly Big Dummy or Kona Ute either. Something like a Pake would probably come first though. I'd actually like to build up a Dolan Pre Cursa but I really need something I don't mind locking up and heading inside for a while. That's hilarious on both sides (geared & fixed). I should have watched the whole thing before commenting - I've got a bad habit of doing that. GoldenArmKid wrote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vn29DvMITu4

Re: i remember a few people talking about bikes.
I've collected bikes as long as I've collected toys. I've slimmed it down to currently 3 bikes. 1. Cinelli Vigorelli (everyday street/track ride). 2. Custom Litespeed roadbike. (great for those 40+mile rides). 3. Schwin granny cruiser complete with basket, fenders and rack. (coffee and supermarket runner). John and Mishka, have a nice spread in the new Ollie magazine. Bikes, and toys! Prolly should have scans up shortly.

Re: i remember a few people talking about bikes.
That Danny MacAskill dude is crazy! I just got a bike for the first time in about 10 years. I've just been riding a motorcycle since my last bike was stolen, but figured I wanted a vehicle I could ride while/after drinking, and for just getting around to friends houses without firing up an engine. Got an '81 Fuji Grand SE. Seems to be all original and operates very smoothly - though I need to put some new pedals on it because the current ones create a pressure point on the bottom of the outer edge of my feet. Think I'm just gonna get some cheap All City platforms unless one of you bike guys recommends against them.

Re: i remember a few people talking about bikes.
I don't have a lot of specific recommendations but are you thinking for exercise, as an alternative to a car (where racks might come in handy - beer/grocery/record runs), in rain/inclement weather (where fenders & chain guards might come in handy). Hills or flat? Answering those questions among others will help guide you towards a specific bike. In any case, I would search out a bike co-op/collective in your area. They're generally set up to help teach and guide you about maintenance, give you a place to work (tools can be expensive), socialize, etc - they'll often have a collection of used bikes/parts for sale or sometimes free as well (generally a nominal membership fee). If you're in Louisville you might be in luck. One bike I would like to pimp as a commuter/around-town bike is the Kona Africabike. For every two bikes sold, one is donated to humanitarian organizations and individual communities primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa as part of Kona's Basic Needs Program. It's not fast, it's not particularly nimble but it is built tough and great as an alternative to an automobile. Back wheel has a built in lock, built in heavy duty racks, basket, chainguard, fenders. I bought one for my girlfriend as a gift a couple years back. Available as single speed or three speed hub ($375/$450 if I remember correctly).
