 Does Anyone Here Like Jazz?
I don't know about you guys, but there's nothing I like more on these cold winter's evenings than curling up by the fire with my pussy on my lap, a glass of Dom, a fine Havana and some Dave Brubeck or Miles Davis spinning on the stereo. Here, for you, are some highlights of the BBC's classic TV series "Jazz Club". Enjoy! Pt.1 (feat. Piles Hussein) : http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=DMBHkntOMtkPt.2 (feat. Jackson Jeffrey Jackson) : http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=hSQVvjiXxJUPt.3 (feat. Jeremy Kwee & Cumquat) : http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=ezbJkZouXX4

Thelonius and 'Trane, maybe a little Bird thrown in, for me. And I'll have an imperial stout or a nice winter ale.

(Extrapolating from charts, rather than reading verbatim from sheet music). My faves; Eric Dolphy, Coltrane (especially the quintet), Yusef Lateef, Mingus. Plenty of others out there, though.

Re: Does Anyone Here Like Jazz?
I love all Jazz ... classic, combo, solo, big band, free, avantgarde, Zorn-related, Jarrett-related, all of it. Well okay not Kenny G and that sort of thing.
I'm not sure it's Jazz per se but I just picked up the two most recent Charlie Hunter albums, both are excellent, especially "Mistico."
Thanks for the links Alice. Bookmarked for later tonight.

I was referring more to complete improvisation. I just can't seem to keep up when a tune goes so far that it seems to eliminate chords entirely. My musical brain needs form! I like Coltrane a lot too but his later stuff doesn't work for me personally.

Re: Does Anyone Here Like Jazz?
Coltrane and Miles Davis are some of my favorites, as with everyone else it seems. But I also like older stuff like Fats Waller and Bix Biederbecke. Plus newer, tamer stuff like Jean Luc Ponty.

Re: Does Anyone Here Like Jazz?
I like Miles Davis, Mingus, Coltrane, Stan Getz, Brubeck, Thelonious Monk, Art Pepper. Even the piano of Keith Jarrett. Just no Kenny G, please.
Also, your original post made me remember the value of simple things on a bitter cold night up in Boston. All one really needs is a warm shelter from the cold, some good music and a glass of something or other. Falling snow would be an added bonus.

Re: Does Anyone Here Like Jazz?
The only comtemporary jazz artists I even listen to are Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, and Herbie Hancock. Everyone else I like is dead!

Re: Does Anyone Here Like Jazz?
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Roy Ayers yet....(maybe because he's more on the funk side of the jazz equation). Personally, I need to hear 'everybody loves the sunshine' at least once a month.

Charles Mingus always did it for me, especially his recording The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. The year my wife bought me Passions of a Man: The Complete Atlantic Recordings, for XMas, I was such a happy boy

Re: Does Anyone Here Like Jazz?
I like almost all jazz, especially classic, but also modern in the MMW/Scofield mode, and some so-called acid jazz... Also like Weather Report/Passport /Return to Forever fusion styles sometimes, but some of that sounds sort of dated to me now.
Exceptions. I don't enjoy: jazz "light" (muzak); and completely free-form, dissonant, avant-garde stuff (I can appreciate the idea behind it, but don't enjoy listening to it)...
I have pretty much everything by the well-known classic jazz artists (old and new) on my itunes and like to just random listen to a smart playlist of this music. Can't go wrong.
My favorites include Miles Davis stuff from just before In A Silent Way through On A Corner/Jack Johnson era...
