As a Brit in the late 70's - early 80's, and a million miles away from the internet, all I recall was Gary Bushell pushing the Oi! movement and its working-class credentials into the spotlight through his writing for Sounds . . . if I remember rightly it was Kozik (way more involved in the music scene than me) voicing the opinion that the Cockney Rejects were the sound of the terraces and the originators of hardcore.

As you suggest, the UK Punk and US New Wave scene ran pretty parallel so it follows that Oi! and Hardcore could well have followed the same evolutionary process, but US hardcore always has been and still is a total mystery to me so I can't comment either way!

This could be a good discussion but skullbrain is not the board for it. I'd rather avoid the mess of talking about that band and would definitely not want anyone to think we are ok with any hate speech here. I hope you guys understand.

Regarding Oi and hardcore. I'd agree that they both evolved pretty independently of each other although both had profound influences on each other at times. The one example I think of is Harley Flannigan and how for better or worse UK skinhead culture would have on NYHC.

My sister used to get Sounds, thats what exposed me to the British stuff. She went to college in DC, so she bought me all the Dischord seven inches when they came out!

well Skrewdriver came from a town just 10 miles from where (Durham oh and thats where the mighty Voorhees are form as well who are class dudes) i lived and they started a new band called Warhammer and they started to practice in the same place as i was at the time and well i got em kicked out, needless to say i was threatened but nothing happened after a few threats

i found there set list and handed it over to the people who run the rooms (its ran by the old punk band Penatration if anyone has heard of them?), and the shite they had written down on that bit of paper drove me mad and we as a band had to do something

i remember leaving my X watch in the room and going in as they where setting up and they laughed at me and throw it in the bin, i was 18 and they where old men the size of buses with tats on their faces, which was a little scary at the time

anyway got loads of stories about all them pricks and yeah take that pick down

the shows were GREAT! the revolts played the second night. Missed out on the Cock Sparrer Scarf the second night. I had lots of friends in town and it was really great time. No fights. Great time. Unfortunately I had no luck with any of the byrds. Most were with their boyfriends. BUT they had a free cock sparrer photo booth. score(?)
