I've had a few pieces at work before. most don't care enough to ask about them. they know it's just something I'm into.

My brother was in town not too long ago and saw some pics of some RxH figs that just came out. He had seen a couple others before and had asked me "don't you have those already"? I said, "yeah, but not in this colorway. I like this colorway too." He kind of just went "ah", but I could tell that he didn't get it.

Then after a moment's thought, I told him that it's kind of like cool sneakers (he has several styles he's into). they don't have a set color--they just put out whatever colors they want, and so maybe one colorway grabs you and then another moves you differently--or gives off a different flavor. like that. each one strikes me differently with every different color pattern, so I pick up what speaks to me regardless of whether I have that sculpt already. I think he got it then.

It's wierd. I never really thouight of ways that these toys are interpreted. I guess I "got it" right away as I have always been a collector, especially if it was different and/or dark. The salvation ink, angel with a skull, just seemed like a cool figure and the irony seemed to just be part of the program but to an "outsider", I can see how they can't wrap themselves around it, too peculiar, too abstract. Those reactions typify my reason for loving these "toys" so much. I strive for the unconventional, I strive for the unmundane, I don't want to be like everyone else...

As you can see, "quoting" is my thing today...

I don't bring in anything Jp vinyl to owrk - just in case it disappears - stuff like that happens here. I do have half a set of James Jarvis Office Archetypes on display and they get nothing but compliments. I also gave my team blind boxed Jled Finders Keepers for Christmas - and no one was weird about it. Loads of people from work have been over to my place and seen my collection and most everyone loves it - but, I do work in Hollywood.

I have some ginzburg ghosts a black off world creature and a bloody kozik damnedron that always gets me comments like... what are those... hmmm, those are interesting... oh' oh' oh' my husband collects dummies...

it's rather amusing to say the least...

I also work in a very corporate environment and have only heard good things about my office collection. The worst thing I heard was "looks just like a toy to me" not seeing whats special about a SB toy. Funny one lady thought my kaijin figure was snoopy.

I also had my chocolate salvation ink delivered to work. My co-worker actually thought it was chocolate and then I told him thats the theme of the color-way. It was funny.

haha i've used that analogy before when guest come over. i still have some western platform stuff which seams easier to explain because i connect them with an artist. but with jp vinyl there in a whole different world.

i dont have them displayed at work. but i do have a few in my desk drawer. ill pull them every out here an there. kinda funny cus when i was younger pops had a drawer too but it had playboys

Anytime I hear people comment on toys or anything I buy I always think about the amazing response Glenn Danzig gave to pushead in the June 86 Thrasher interview, it still resonants with me today:

DANZIG: Toys are happening, if you want to get 'em, get 'em. If you don't, you don't.

Pus: The big question is, aren't you a little too old for this?

DANZIG: I don't think in terms of age. If I want to buy something I don't care what someone says to me. I'm buying it for me, not for them. If I cared what they thought, I would say to them before I bought it, "Do you think I should buy this?" and in that case, I'd be a moron.

At the last gallery I worked at, the owner was a rich dude who had a pretty decent collection of fine art (including Murakami, Pettibon, Hirst, etc.) and always shook his head as the boxes got delivered there to me. I'd show them the toys, open them up and leave them out for a few days before I took them home. Everyone there thought I was nuts. They loved the names of everything however...especially Nougaki for some reason. My closest friend there still mimicks me describing "finally landing a sweet nougaki I'd been searching for."

Then we got the catalog for the first auction with Kaiju at Phillips.

Fast forward a year or so when the owner was in Japan for one of our artists and he ended up coming back with a suitcase full of toys. Mostly it was capsule and blind box bullshit...but he came back with a lot of it. It was really funny...but cool too because he brought me back a set of Star Wars Kubricks I didn't have yet. So, as always, money talks. Though I find most people still choke when you tell them what even a mini costs.

Very interesting discussion in here! Sometimes you get so used to being around vinyl all the time you forget that for some people spending upwards of $50 out of the gate on a figure is ridiculous. Easy to forget how...specialized... our aesthetic sensibilities are!

I find it interesting when my friends who collect records dont understand toy collecting.
I usually just respond with shoving them out the door and telling them to come back when "they get it".

PS- you would be surprised how much our collections differ here at S7.

My Mishka/Lamour/Cure Boogie just came into work today and blew everyone's mind. I work at a law firm, the most negative comment I got was "Oh that's cute...you collect toys?" But most the people I work with now thought it was kind of cool, but then again they don't know how much these guys cost.

I get the same thing, usually some of my friends end up being supportive but I have a nagging suspicion they think one collection might finance the other. Definitely not the case

Usually when friends see my toys, they always say, "Oh, that looks cool!" or, "40 year old virgin?"

one of my good friends always ask me what new toys iv gotten this week and ask to send him links
he loves the dorol and the pushead figures but then again most are like when are you going to sell this stuff and buy a big ass tv and a ps3 (or put a downpayment on a house)
