Understandable, but look at the type of guys who are usually really into dragons and fantasy swords and it starts to make a little more sense.

i'm sure you are right, but i worked with this dragons and fantasy realms type of guy once a year or so back and he was scary as hell. he wasn't big and hairy with flaming hammers strapped to his side or anything. he was scrawny and visually unthreatening. but man, that dude could totally explode into tantrums about the most random trivial shit. and his eyes were always ungodly wide and he was all tense and shaky most of the time. he was metal trapped in the most unlikely shell.

Good call! That 12" w/Rye Coalition is probably my most favourite split record ever.

Brooks had a good list going (some of my faves)

Also, check out Behemoth or Obscura :D

The new Obscura is sonic awesomeness! (particularly if you like technical-progressive-death metal)

Yep, Cosmogenesis is great. Not sure it's what uberboy is looking for, but it's definitely tech/death at it's best.

I forgot this classic for epic power metal: Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth

Also remembered after a browse through the library...
Borknagar - Empiricism
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness

Celtic Frost "To Mega Therion". Incredibly cinematic with zero cheese.
