This looks like someone rolled super sculpey and then grabbed it w/ their hands and squished it.
Then added eyes and ears.

+1 Exactaly. Nothing to this piece at all. This is more of a sculpture.

Post Re: Mark Ryden’s first Toy- YHWH
i think its kind of interesting that this is the first vinyl piece he chose to make. if you consider it as a toy, in the terms that we are familiar with, it could be seen to fall flat. however, to be fair, the japanese vinyl collector community has a pretty narrow focus compared to all the toys that are out there (myself included). certainly not a negative thing, but i think it should be noted that this figure is probably not created with skullbrain peeps specifically in mind.

whether or not it should be branded 'toy' is debatable, but i think it holds up well as an art object, or sculpture edition, or whatever. i dont think it would look that out of place on my shelf, although its not really my cup of tea, personally.

luke, i think a better comparison might be made bewtween the YHWH figure and Biskup's Ghonner, as that was more of a large 'art object' than a toy, was that figure articulated? in terms of the shape and styling though, i see where youre coming from with the doku comparrison. if the YWHW had arms on it, how different would it be from a lot of the stuff that gets discussed here? that rumble monsters apple? emupaiya etch? blobpus?

I may be in the minority here, but I like it. Like Josh said, it reminds me of Biskups ghonner which I consider more of a vinyl sculpture than a toy. I am wondering if the construction will be similar to the ghonner with more of a vinyl shell that is filled with foam to support the weight and keep the shape of the vinyl. I think if it were solid vinyl it would probably droop after a short time. Another figure that was similar in design is Pete Fowlers Van Orlax. I can't wait to have one.

Don't think so. Which is a pity - sculpt looks great and it would have definitely made more sense that way...

Interestingly, the original plans called for a figure of the girl to accompany YHWH. Ryden eventually decided to focus solely on YHWH.

It made us smile to learn that Ryden’s son Jasper was finally the one to convince his father to make an art toy and also chose the character.

I don't think Mark ever wanted to do this, and basically just acquiesced to his sons wishes.
I still think it's pretty "meh" - but a lot of the posts seem to have overlooked why this "figure" was made.

For me, and this discussion, it's got nothing to do with "why" it was made. I think it's very sweet he did that, and like Alex mentioned, he does what he wants and I can respect that.

This just isnt my cup of tea. And you bring up a good point Josh, this toy isnt geared towards folks on this board, but I do like a lot of the "western" toys that come out. Ryden was one of the original folks who got me interested in a lot of my hobby so hoping for a bunny vinyl has always been on my interest list.

Maybe its an action twig.

Echika-chan is a Metro shopping mall character inspired by the above toys as well - and probably also aimed to skim popularity off Ryden's appeal.

Does make me smile though.

Definately true. Ryden's 1st choice to step into the 3D world is a fascinating one in the end... But as many have already stated above, i could have only hoped for a better character to portray as a 'toy'.

I like the figure. Although the addition of the girl would have made it better in my opinion. Overall I think it is something that is a detachment of what is out there. If he would have done one of his more iconic characters it would have ended up looking like pieces we have already seen. Lincoln would have just looked like Lincoln and a piece of meat would be a piece of meat.

If you like something more classic Ryden you could always shell out the dough for this...

Sigh...

HUGE fan of Mark Ryden and even though this isn't my first choice for a toy from him, I'd love to own it just to put along with my other mark Ryden stuff. In the end, it's all moot anyhow, since this thing is going to sell out so quickly to the ebay flippers (the recent 'Rose' pins sold out the edition of 500 in 90 seconds) why bother to even get excited about it..

Well, I didn't say I wouldn't try to get one...just seems these things always get released on weekdays in the morning or early afternoon and I have a job where I kinda have to be during those hours.
