Way back in the 80s, when the Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe was published, Wolverine's claws were shown to be spring-loaded bionic implants. When the character was originally conceived, the claws were intended to be part of his costume, and I remember a big deal being made by the characters when Logan first popped his claws without his gloves on.

One thing that's always bugged me about the handling of Wolvie over the years is the tendency of the writers to associate him with wolves, probably due to ignorance as to what a wolverine actually is (it's not a baby wolf).

I remember reading that at one point, Claremont was going to reveal that Logan was an actual wolverine that was mucked around with by the High Evolutionary. But now we're really getting into geek territory and I feel uncomfortable.

I remember being a kid and reading the Xmen/FF crossover miniseries and seeing my first introduction to wolverine's origins there. They showed it as him being experimented on, I've never seen that the comics show him having the claws since birth.

Do you think that because the character is read by so many younger fans now that they're shying away from the whole human experimentation aspect of it? I tend to think not, mostly because the first movie did show this a bit, but it definitely piques my curiosity now.

As it stands now with the comic continuity, the idea is that Wolvie was born in the mid-1800s, popped his claws at a very early age which led to a traumatic event, and his healing factor "scabbed over" these memories which made him forget about the claws.

Years later in the 1970s or whenever, the trauma of the adamantium baking process made him pop his claws, which were now coated with the metal like every other bone in his body.

When originally picked up by Claremont, though, Wolverine was definitely not intended to be this old or have claws as part of his original anatomy. If you read the Days of Future Past storyline, Wolvie is noticeably older in the space of only 25 years or so. If he was already 150 years old or so, he should have looked this way already (or partway there).

I have that book and was thinking about this when I made my first post
but I didn't want to reference it because I wasn't certain of the exact details.
I do remember the debate on whether or not they were a part of the costume too.

I think the first indication of the "claws from birth" idea was in the "Origin" comic
that was 8 issues or something like that.
I'll say that it's been interesting how they've evolved his origin.
I'm sure the mystery is one of the reasons people are drawn to him.

I think that Magneto ripped the adamantium out of Wolverine (and exposed the bone claws) at least a few years before the Origin comic was published.

I think too many writers over the years tried to add some mystery to the character, and now all of the mysteries conflict. I liked him when he was just a wild hairy guy with a murky past.

I just saw it. I liked when Wolverine fought Baraka from Mortal Kombat.

I would agree it's dumb to watch this online if one had been planning on going to see this movie. as I normally wouldn't see a flick like this in the theater (as there's always something better playing at smaller theaters here in the city) then seeing it online was probably the only way I'd ever watch this...I also found it interesting to view it AS a work print. since we're used to these slick cg masterpieces, it was nice to see a little bit of the curtain pulled back...

I don't think this effects the bottom line on this movie in the slightest. the fanboys who want to see this are going no matter what...

Weapon-X implied that the claws were already there when one of the doctors noticed that excess amounts of adamantium were flowing to the forearm/wrist area and they didn't know why.

That never made sense to me, though. You mean that the government was spending kerjillions of dollars on this super soldier program and they never gave the subject an x-ray?

HA! Thats kind of what I thought, but I dig the bone claws so I accepted it and moved on.

That period of Wolverine was fun, he was extra crazy without the adamantium. Maybe it didn't make much sense, but i always liked seeing his busted up broken bone claws
