 Advice Needed: Repairing Vintage Vinyl
I need advice from vintage collectors. Just got in a vintage piece w/ a leg joint that's almost completely torn. My question is, should I fix it or not? From my search, people have recommended using Zap-A-Gap to repair torn vinyl. But what's the etiquette w/ vintage pieces? Should I just clean him up and display him proudly w/ broken leg and all? He doesn't stand very well though. Will get pics up later tonight.

I've never tried JET super glue on vintage, but that stuff does the trick on most plastic and vinyl materials. It's really messy, so be careful.

Zap-A-Gap. Can't go wrong with it, but if that vinyl ever leaves your hands make sure you tell the buyer that it was repaired.

Re: Advice Needed: Repairing Vintage Vinyl
I had the vinyl knob on a leg tear like that. It's not going anywhere (old childhood robot vinyl/plastic toy), so I opted for a more permanent fix and used epoxy sculpt inside so it would be solid again once it cured. It was very close to what you have and I just put the putty in there and smoothed a > < shape inside to hold the two parts secure. It's stronger than the other leg, but this is an extreme fix and only if you aren't concerned with selling it later or value.

That's looks like a sick vintage Joe!
I don't really mind a little tear on a vintage piece, if i got this in this condition, there must be something with it that PUSHED me to score this particular piece.

Re: Advice Needed: Repairing Vintage Vinyl
awesome
the toy, not the tear
if you don't feel comfortable fixing it yourself, i know there has to be someone around here adept at doing it

Re: Advice Needed: Repairing Vintage Vinyl
Ouch, that's drastic.
One solution is to completely excise the "collar" from the leg and glue it straight tot the body. That's a little extreme, but I can't imagine you being able to take out the leg, repair it, and reinsert it without screwing up the repair.

Re: Advice Needed: Repairing Vintage Vinyl
Zap-a-gap applied sparingly with a pin is fine.

Cool toy! Fix it, fix it! The torn leg would drive me nuts. Just seeing the pic makes me wanna come over and fix him.

It wouldn't be as strong, but may be easier to reverse if you have second thoughts later.

Re: Advice Needed: Repairing Vintage Vinyl
Ok, I "fixed" it. No glue, nothing permanent. Thanks to everyone for their advice. I will let pics explain what I did. Able to KICK ASS now!

Creative solution- looks like the results were good.
The name on the foot looks like "Burinda." Traditional Japanese name? ;P

Re: Advice Needed: Repairing Vintage Vinyl
you did the right thing .works fine and de-values it the least. no super glue on a joint it will never be correct and doesnt hold up. you can buy a vinyl glue in japan if you want .

Wouldn't want it to melt into grey goo and bond with the vinyl! If theres ever such a thing as archival sponge.

I will just have to constantly remember to check it and swap it out when needed.
