Post Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
I'm excited to go check it out this weekend.
I have no expectations as I'm no Trekkie.

Update: It was awesome.

ok, just got back. I really really enjoyed it. A few hit-and-miss moments, but overall I'm impressed. I'm not a huge Star Trek fan, but I grew up with one (my dad). ST got the face lift it needed, but they didn't deviate too much from the classic. If you're not a Trek fan, you'll enjoy it. If you are one, I actually think you'll enjoy it even more.

While not being a Trekkie either, I really do like the original series. The campiness of it, along with the original characters just reminds me of when I was a kid (it was on all the time in the 70's).

I enjoyed the movie, not over done with one liners or too many “yeah right” moments. They definitely paid tribute to the mannerisms of the original cast. The actor doing McCoy was spot on.

Lastly I picked the wrong day to go see it as the PK Zudon dropped when I left! Doh! Oh well, can't have everything.

I enjoyed it, better then I thought it was going to be. I thought it was a little too silly in parts.

It also seemed like some left over sound effects from the Star War films were present.

Something else worth mentioning, I actually was really pleased with the casting. Simon Pegg as Scotty didn't completely turn me off, even though he was cast mostly as comedy relief. Zachary Quinto was a brilliant Spock. I also noticed some creative camera-tilts during dialogue true to classic Star Trek style.

Ben Burtt who did the sound effects for Star Wars was credited for sound effects here. So hey.

Three general things I really liked now that it's been a few days, is the fact that the transporter was not instantaneous. So they could be locked on, but it didn't mean all was good. Also, the fact that they have finally showed the hundreds of folks who are on those ships instead of just showing miscellaneous crew and the whole show centering on the bridge. Also, I appreciate the fact they showed real wreckage and honestly people being tossed into space... I get that the whole world of Star Trek is clean and perfect, but you rip a ship apart, you rip a ship apart...

Also, the way the red shirt bites it during the space jump... Horrifically funny.

What's the difference between yellow, blue & red shirts?

I totally knew the red shirt guy was going to bite it on the space jump! On the original series whenever they beamed down for a mission the red shirts always got it. Glad they paid homage to that.

I totally laughed out loud when they announced the sky diving team: "Kirk,... Sulu,... Shapiro..." Bwah!!! (I think I was the only one that laughed though.)

I really enjoyed it. I kept thinking "Okay, when are they gonna go back in time to save Vulcan?"... and they didn't... (suck on that Winona Ryder!).

This really demonstrated how poorly Rick Berman and team have really let the license go to Hell... Thought it was a lot of fun, and now I have to go back and watch it again for the smaller details that I might've missed.

Certainly felt like a much better film than Wolverine but that wasn't hard I guess.

Yep. Saw both within days of each other.
Star Trek was very impressive.
It's all a clever blueprint for a new kick ass movie franchise.

Saw it (in IMAX) with my dad, who is an old school trekkie, and my fiancee who is more of a next generation fan, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.
Lots of "homages" throughout, everyone said their catch phrases once and all that, plenty of action (mostly Kirk getting the snot beat out of him haha), even had a couple of cool alien creatures thrown in

My main gripe - Why the shit did they have so much red matter when it only took a drop to do what they needed?!

because a big ball of red goo suspended in a tube looks way cooler than a little ball of red goo suspended in a tube

My question was why did they even need to drill into a planet? A black hole NEXT to a planet isn't good enough?

Maybe a black hole forming from within the core would turn a planet inside out and destroy it.
A black hole next to a planet would only suck it in. :?

Just watched it for the second time this morning.

Were there any Klingons in the whole movie?

No, no. Those are KINGons. Klingons have the batlith. KINGons have the nipple pinch.

I thought they mentioned Klingon something or other near the beginning of the movie, but I don't remember seeing any?

the only time I heard Klingon mentioned was in the very beginning when someone remarked that the Romulan ship they encountered was too big to be Klingon, or something to that effect.

i am glad i am not a "die-hard" star trek fan, because this movie ruled to me. and i don't want to be one of those annoying fans who compare every aspect to star trek continuity/reality. i do that enough all ready with dc comics, and i hate myself for that. i loved this movie.

It seems like that red gunk had to physically hit something before it would create a black hole...

Still doesn't make sense, but whatever.

Post Re: Early reports in on Star Trek (some spoilers)
i may be wrong but I believe the red matter needed to fuse with a planet's core to actually be activated into creating a black hole. The movie was excellent. Seeing it an IMAX theatre at the Space and Aviation museum probably enhanced the viewing pleasure. Klingons were also mentioned about being attacked by the Romulan ship.
