Post Chp. 6: AstroZbomination; the end
Sorry for crap pix, have no room to shoot with all the painting going on and it's been raining for 5 days so I can't take the monsters out to play. Also will do regular posts now this thing is gettin' cumbersome.
Zombie front and close up:

Image
Image

Last week on kaiju katastrophes:

Noted request for other shots of Big Baltan; have to re-shoot my re-shoots first. Doh. So instead of big, here's very small: a GID translucent mini gundam finger puppet, not an eraser (heh). It's about an inch and a quarter tall, total gashopon 100yen or so on YJA.

2 coats of the patented Tokyo Bukkake White, some gold metal highlights, silver metal highlights and the other areas with a deep coat of Interference Blue.

Thing was an absolute monster to shoot, sensor kept sliding right off it, wanted to focus on anything but the figure.
BTW, I'm looking for more of these GID translucent mini robs to paint, any hints besides YJA?

Image Image
Image Image

Backstory:

So, when I was in Frisco I was looking at Pre-Columbian ceramics at the deYoung; always liked Mayan stuff. Pretty taken with how the Mayan blue dye goes over the white slip over the terracotta base with little mica flakes scattered through.

Always liked the little Ghostland figs, too; esp. the 2006 SDCC blue ones. Never knew what to do with 'em though.
Then it hit me; do another clumsy, ill-conceived, poorly rendered tribute!
This time props and apologies to Mr. Flynn and the entire Central American culture complex.

Image
Image

Everything new is old again:
New on 5/26

Who hasn't thought: "Hey, I'd really love a GID Gaigan. If only it went with my furniture!"
Well, languish no more fellow 'brainers! Yes at last a fine French Provincial GID Gaigan. Drill a hole through him, get a chiffon lampshade and he's a nightstand lamp, no more groping for a switch in the dark!
Sold only in finer thrift stores.
Done as black rub w/ gold metal splash and a pink translucent tongue.

Image Image

Less New:

Old: [ Okay, before you get your hate on, this project started as a sight gag; check my thread over in the BASK area 'bout my visit for the show.

That said, I got interested in trying some more customs based on the inked-up Bandai cheapies that I did. I added some more marker from what cheapies were available at the 100 yen store in the JapanTown Mall, truly dreadful colors. The reddish-pink that you see actually has opaque white mixed in and coats like chalk. But it made me want to try something similar with real paint. Besides, who in their right mind paints Bandais?
Don't worry, they're reprints. ]

So consider this shot a sketch, a "Before" as in Before and After:

Image

After (All surfaces re-painted, even if not immediately apparent) :

Image
Image

Be back in a week or so with the "After" shot so I can harvest the rich abundance of scorn or whatever. Good criticism is always cool.

In future episodes:
Update;
Here's the billiken mocking colors and textures of an old, original cast iron bank without doing a full-on antiquing job, sort of a study. As the new painters taught me on another board, when in doubt, add blood drips!

The Billiken Billiken and the Curiously Unsatisfying Shikaruna Mitin (Before):

Image

And After:

Image Image Image

I chickened out on the shikaruna and painted my giant cheap blow-mold baltan instead. This way he properly accessorizes with the trashy pink lawn flamingos that we find at rummage sales.

Thanks for the support. Don't get yer hopes up, though. Not only am I new to painting toys, but I have a budding reputation as a wrecker to uphold!

Update 4/24:
All righty then. Got 'em washed and base coated with Krylon Workable Fixative. Time to abominate!

Thanks, I expect that a number of folks are rolling their eyes and being simply thankful that I didn't get my hands on anything "good". Heh.

Umm, not to mess w/ S7's rice bowl, but try GR, it was in the store, don't know about online. Plain brown, gold or silver.

Classic example of pop culture diffusion, transference and mutation. From Americans inventing it and saying that it was a Japanese god, to the Japanese who adopted it and made it a spirit, back to America and even the Inuit. One of the reasons that I love this toy stuff; it's a cheerful way to regard how goofy the world is. Still want to get one of the really old cast iron banks.

That and wooden netsuke. Iron, wood and ivory are certainly not eternal, but they don't outgas or crumble in sunlight and ozone. I think there will be a Nobel for the first chemistry genius who can figure out how to stabilize vinyl and make it archival.

Gone way beyond crazy, Terrell! Figured I should try something, anything and then build on it. I've been putting off painting for a long time.
Kept thinking; "Someday I'll have the time..."
Finally occurred to me that someday wouldn't happen unless I started...

This bank is really inexpensive. I was thinking of grabbing one and I just might have to.

It's about time someone did some Conceptual Kaiju. :) I actually like these. The introduction of the "lowly" craft elements into the serious world of custom toys is really quite charming. The only thing that would make this project better is if you just went for it and "customized" something "good."

Thanks! I'm starting out simply for the most part and just trying different things that either appeal to my humor or are doable from a beginner's standpoint.
I've got lots of ideas, but skills are another story.
As for good stuff, I've seen enough well meaning novice painters like myself trash stuff either through lack of skill or just plain artist's ego that I thought that I'd hold off 'til I painted more and learned a little bit more about distro numbers. Will get to better stuff eventually, but for now I feel pretty free to work on the lower priced production stuff.
In the meantime, there is a chance that someone out there feels good enough about him or her self that they are about to start stripping an Anraku... or some old Hawaiian Bullmark.
That should give us all something to see!

Is the world ready for a gold-sprayed macaroni Bemon?

I particularly like the yellow flower chest guy you did, and the bank is mighty fine too! Of course, a kaiju collector's bank never has anything in it, but it is a nice novelty item just the same! ;)

Paint that Mightin!

The quest for new techniques and styles is very interesting when seen as a personal exploration.
Then drawn on pieces make me think of three dimensional zine illos. Be fun to see these paired w/ 2-d work as well!
BTW I may have eaten a jelly bean outta your ICFSB boxed duo. Wish I'd found the time to chat more about oldschool printing (sigh).

Good question!
I do recall this custom by Lord Bemon that got a pretty good reception when it showed up at the Kaiju show in New York.
Maybe it's time someone turned the tide.

Nice as can be on the freakin' goga! Nice shot too.

Yes bert, get one of those cheap-ass banks! Fun to paint!

Been a little busy here, no time to chat just mumbles and curses as I base coated 17 more bandai, started painting on 5 non-bandai, and stripped 2 non-b that I hosed up. Got 5 little non-bandai ones 2/3 done.

Yeah Lee, I'm loving old school painting, but someone just lent me 3 airbrushes and another guy lent me a compressor, suppose I best be learning new skills and modernizing my workflow...24 more bandai coming.

Scotty I'll be posting another astromons in a week or two next to a variant one that I won't paint.

Stay tuned... god knows what ill-thought wretched excess I'll put up next... something to do with Mayan ceramic chemistry, I suppose.
Shikaruna is still intimidating me.
