 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
I was wondering when people were gonna start talking about this. I think it has above a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatos.
I will now ignore this thread til i have seen it sometime later in the week.

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
Hoping to see it today. Seeing Evil Dead II last weekend was perfect timing - "Groovy". Good to See Sam Raimi breaking out of mainstream Hollywood. Maybe this is to help apologize for Spiderman 3.

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
Saw this last night and it was so awesome! One of my top five of the year so far. Don't be put off by the PG-13 rating...what they lack in gore, they make up for in gross stuff. Movie was SICK! Loved every second of it. I'm hoping Sam Raimi plans on making horror movies again. Forget Spiderman, Sam! Oh and the ending rules.

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
glad to hear some positive comments about this. I caught the ass end of a trailer the other day for this and thought it looked blah. Then I saw the trailer in its entirety and heard Raimi. Then I was sold. gonna try to catch it this weekend.

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
Just got back from seeing this and it was seriously great. Old-school horror, very close to the first "Evil Dead"; the fact that it wasn't insanely gory or overly violent was a major plus for me. Avoid spoilers at all costs, the surprises are half the fun. Raimi has redeemed himself in my book after the horrifically terrible Spider-Man films. Hopefully he can switch-hit between those and stuff like this.

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
Thanks for the info; folks. From the trailers I saw, this looked like another generic PG-13 horror film that Hollywood seems to love so much. It's nice to know it isn't.

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
Everyone should take a lesson from Raimi in how to make one of the most gross-out PG-13 movies I've ever seen.
I haven't had that much fun watching a movie in a while.

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
It was decent, but its not like Raimi has struck oil with another Evil Dead or anything. Had some good moments, a few decent laughs, and some good gross-out.
Its good, definitely made for a fun Sunday night movie, but I don't think its the be-all end-all of horror comedy.

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
Oh man, it was great, and the whole theatre was super into it, more than any non special event horror movie screening I've ever seen I think.
It had some good Evil Dead references, I loved the demonic jig! The only downside for me was the CGI, it is a deal breaker, especially in one scene it was just like come on, you did the same thing in evil dead with a ping pong ball and now you do it with all of this CGI and it ruins it.
I did watch the first Evil Dead directly after it that night and of course it can't come close to touching it, but I do think it is a step in the right direction of commercial horror movies and I hope it's successful, maybe then he'll make Evil Dead 4!

I was hoping for more, I realised halfway through I was hoping for much much more and decided to just take it as it is. As it is, it's quite entertaining, but I have seen Evil Dead, and this is every bit the Evil Dead in spirit, sort of sad that there has been no real progression from Raimi aside from budget allowances.

missy wrote: Its good, definitely made for a fun Sunday night movie, but I don't think its the be-all end-all of horror comedy. The thing is it's the best studio horror film in forever and at quick thought the best PG-13 horror film ever made. It took a director like Rami to work around the MPAA limitations and make something that's a bit gross, creepy, and scary. While there's plenty of independent or foreign horror out there better then it I think as far as what he put together with DMTH it's pretty impressive. His growth as a director with all the Spiderman films behind him really showed with this film. I feel it's one of his better directed films and once it hits DVD the cult status of this will grow in a big way. I guess I am in the camp that either expects to never see an Evil Dead 4 or if we get an Evil Dead film it's going to be a reboot and he and Bruce will have nothing to do with it. So I just consider this my Evil Dead 4.

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
Start to finish a great deconstruction of the horror genre that retained its scariness and was laugh out loud funny. The opening scene was BRILLIANT

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
Sure. I have not fully thought this through so bare with me. It seems like Raimi, a clear horror buff, utilized many of the traditional horror techniques but spun them on their head. I think the first scene is the best example. That scene could have been taken from one of hundreds of horror movies, shot for shot. What great directors do is create narratives whose meaning is derived from the juxtaposition of certain scenes i.e. scenes gain their meaning from their place in the overall narrative. In most horror movies that scene has no meaning beyond establishing the nature of the demon, creature etc. In this movie it is not only a nod to those other horror movies, but it also gains a comedic, and almost reverent tone. I thought most of the scenes were like that.
I'm not sure if I'm getting my point across but I just thought the film was more reflexive and lyrical than 99% of the trash out there right now. And that's aside from the fact that it was just a fun movie experience.

 Re: Drag Me To Hell...!!!
Good stuff, thank you.
I have put more thought into this since seeing it last night, and I think what was so disappointing was how it was never really sure what it was. It blew it's wad on every jump scare chance it got, with little in the way of head nods or homage, obvious jump after obvious false scare. It never really built up to any level remotely creepy, which he succeeded with in Evil Dead. This rehashed Evil Dead II which was more comedy than horror anyway. Amry of Darkness as great as it may be, is just Comedy, made in the vein of horror, ala Abbot & Costello meet Dracula. I think the problem with DMTH was that it never knew what it was, it never settled on a genre, and once it got too close to one, it swung ineffectively towards the other.
He used the same tricks he's used before. He tried to tip his hat to the 80s with the Universal logo, which I must admit got me excited, but that's pretty much where it all ended. I think it made me come to terms with something I have thought for years, but ignored due to its blasphemous nature...
Sam Raimi made one good horror film, Evil Dead, then like alot of other directors, moved on when he could. He is not a god and he is not the saviour.
