Re: Official SDCC 2009 Preview Thread (Spoilers)
I was about to suggest it is something to do with the complexity of his art explaining why Ron's art doesnt seem to translate too well into toys (McSupersized is my favorite (altho I wish he had articulated arms)) - but Pushead's work translates incredibly well into toys and its complex. Actually, I think its the lighting effects Ron uses in his paintings - they just cant be captured in a toy.

I agree with you Carl that it has something to do with the lighting effects in his paintings that gets lost in translation to the figures. But I think with the proper paint job it can be captured. I want to buy one so bad to test out my theory with a custom paint app.

I like Ron's white GID original Rabbbit fig from SDCC05, but everything else toy related he's done doesn't work for me.

Great concepts, great sculpts, odd physical scale, inferior 'feel' to the vinyl and just inferior and sloppy paint apps make it a missed opportunity for me . . . maybe if someone like Strangeco had been involved the finishing would have been closer to the mark . .

His figures just end up looking lost out of the context of his paintings.

The supersize me at least applies a sense of irony to the concept of fast food, but the fat alien doesn't even make any sense. It's like half a joke that's missing a punchline. Boo Ron. Booo! Ron: ok, so.... there's this really fat alien Me: yeah? and? Ron: that's it. That's the joke. Me:

Yes we know eating a bunch of junk from McDonald's will make you fat. We know We live in a world where kids watch Mickey Mouse yet they grow up to be soldiers, and North Korea threatens atomic war. Yes we know the Earth is polluted (the three eyed rabbit) yet it still has the cutesy Disney feel we all know and love. His painting skills are so strong, I love to see his art just to analyze his technique, but his toys don't stand alone, they don't possess his amazing artistic talents and alone are just obvious statements.

I know what you mean, JM. I was never really a fan of Ron English til I saw his paintings in person. They are pretty amazing but the toys just feel like a cheap rip-off of his own stuff.

Re: Official SDCC 2009 Preview Thread (Spoilers)
I had multiple opportunities to purchase a reasonably priced painting of Marilyn with Mickey tits - but decided I couldnt live with it. The sculpture as usual doesnt live up to teh paintings.

I dunno...I agree that the VAST majority of Western vinyl is crap, but I think we can all agree that there are plenty of American toy offerings that would be of interest here. I'm not going to Comic Con, but I'd be interested in hearing about new He Man figures, NECA TMNT figures, Madballs....shit like that. Or is that too off-topic? Like, is this thread supposed to be JUST Western/"urban" vinyl? 'Cause if it is, I won't bother clicking here anymore. This thread has completely sucked since it started.

Yeah, I just assumed it was ALL Western. The "crap" comment was more of a joke/note.

This thread was way better last year - and by better I mean it had way more stuff that was terrible! It's been pretty skimpy so far this year. I want to see more - the good stuff too, but particularly more crap!
