Question ...

Has anyone tried to bottle the liquid with the dye in it afterward, for the next time you use it ?

I mean I doubt it looses any property, and it would be a waste to just flush it.

Has anyone done this ?

You know, I thought about doing this too. It seems possible and might be worthwhile if you mixed up a custom color you planned on using again in the future. It would also save you a little bit of money and time spent on trips to the store.

However, RIT is really cheap and, when using it, I rarely use the entire packet/bottle. For custom colors you could just jot down the "recipe."

I guess it just depends on whether or not you feel like storing bottles/jars of the dye solution.

Yeah I guess you have a good point. The box cost 3 bucks so what the hell. I tried a simple black dye and it worked out VERY well. The base vinyl was yellow it covered it fully vey well and even with some serious scratching and rubbing afterwards it never came through. I wish I had tried this a long time ago.

Looking at it from the opposite end; does anybody know how to bleach vinyl?

Looks like these dudes figured it out a while ago:

Seriously though, any info here would be awesome. I would think that bleach would damage the vinyl, it's pretty harsh stuff and the vinyl can act like a sponge with chemicals.

I have a question for anyone who died toys a year or so ago.
How have they been for colorfastness? I'm guessing since it appears to soak right into the vinyl that it is fairly good, but I was wondering if it's more sensitive to sun exposure?

Like all vinyl, or colors for that matter, if exposed to enough uv rays it will fade, but I've had a few that have held up very well because they're displayed out of direct sunlight just like the rest of my toys.

I've asked locomoco this and he said they all have held up well with no problems or leakage.

I think it depends on the second step of boiling in clean water to get the excess dye out. Once its in there its pretty much in there.
