considering that he was surrounded by enablers, and was likely never refused a single thing he asked for, I think you could say that.

I could say the same exact thing about Iggy Pop and all the crap he's released in the decades since the Stooges/Iggy were relevant. Ditto with The Ramones. Past 1978, who cares about that discography. Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. Who cares about any of their noodlings past the mid 1970s. Heart past their first two albums is forgettable. You could say that about anyone/anything in any field. The whole “what have you done lately” mentality is old/played/pathetic. If you don't like someone, just say it. Just don't qualify it with some elaborate theory of pop entrainment and psychology.

Maybe I didn't state my thoughts clearly (or I'm just a callous asshole). He definitely DID contribute to the world, but I don't think he had anything MORE to contribute - therefore, IMO, this isn't a "loss". We're not missing out on a future album, we didn't lose a Mother Theresa/Nelson Mandela. He was just some washed-up, ex-pop star. Selling out concerts doesn't mean he's making a contribution - the Stones are still selling out concerts. I imagine Britney Spears is selling out concerts. None of them have made any music that's contributed to the wealth of the world in the past 20 years. I think what you must be saying is that none of them have contributed to the wealth of YOUR world in the past 20 years. Each of those artists have made music in that time, and while it may not have enriched your life, it's obviously been a part of other people's lives -- or else none of them would still be relevant. And if you're talking about "loss" to human kind overall as a race, sure, not many individuals fall into that category do they...

Re: Sorry Farrah - Michael Jackson is dead...?
Farrah dying that I was expecting but Michael Jackson was a complete surprise and at 50? Hmm. Wonder what the official autopsy results would be.
His early work was amazing, i.e. Thriller, but his later work and physical self morphed into something sadly unrecognizable.
I wonder what will happen to his children? He's got three as I recall.

Re: Sorry Farrah - Michael Jackson is dead...?
FWIW, I just found this Rolling Stone article where Michael Jackson announced a 10 concert run in London. What’s really creepy is this: Quote: “This is it. I just want to say these will be my final show performances in London. This is it, when I say this is it, this is it,” Jackson told the crowd. “I’ll be performing the songs my fans want to hear — this is it. This is really it. This is the final curtain call. I’ll see you in July.” Fittingly, the series of concerts has been dubbed “This Is It.”

Aside from ABC and I want You Back, I can truthfully say that I never cared for anything else he put out. I'll still pour some Jesus Juice on the curb tonight out of respect for his early talent.

Re: Sorry Farrah - Michael Jackson is dead...?
Bah, whatever - I've never gotten these "RIP" threads that show up on every single message board every time someone (once) famous dies, and it boiled over with MJ. I just find the phenomenon strange. Facebook is tragic right now. And rarely do the threads say much more than "RIP" or "He/she's in a better place" - it's all so hokey. I can't picture anyone I know who's made a "that bums me out, RIP" comment sincerely being saddened by his death. But for some reason everyone digitally lines up to pay condolences. Besides, that fucker bought the Beetles catalog out from under his "friend" just so he could profit off their music. And yeah, "Thriller" was the first album I ever owned too.

Re: Sorry Farrah - Michael Jackson is dead...?
I dunno. The guy made the most successful album in history. Whatever you think of the guy, that counts for something.
I've said it before - it's tough for these guys to live in the public spotlight, and Jackson did it since he was a young child. Nobody's perfect, but everything a celebrity does is gossip fodder. Granted, MJ was way out there on the bizarre scales, but given the course of his life, I can't say I'm too surprised. Living in that pressure cooker must have been unreal.
