 Re: Costumes @ SDCC 2009
That's Spider woman, joe. Her old costume from the late 70s/early 80s. I think this is my favourite part of SDCC. What is going on in these peoples heads? I'd love to know.

 Re: Costumes @ SDCC 2009
=) I built a replic a Boba Fett costume once about 2 years ago- I can tell you why I did it- I really fucking liked Boba Fett, and I wanted a costume so that on Halloween and conventions I could be Boba Fett! He's cool, the greatest Bounty Hunter in the galaxy. I also wanted to do it to see if I could do it, build an authentic, accurate replica of the props in the movies, which I did. It took me the better part of a year to complete it but I did, except for the Jetpack, and I wore it out once for halloween and it was fucking cool... but then I realized I spend nearly $15k on this costume I was going to wear once or twice a year, so I sold it about 2 months later. =) Now, what I don't understand is the "wishful thinking" factor- Yeah, I dressed as Boba Fett, but I'm 6' tall and 160lbs... I fit the part and I built an accurate good looking costume so I looked the part. Spider-man, Supergirl and the Blood angel listed before look good, even Shredder is a good example that the costume doesn't necessarily need to be extravagantly done- it looks "Ok". Thor and Spider-woman are ok... Spider-woman moreso, but Someone needs to tell Magneto there he's a short little latino kid with football pads and a helmet that doesn't fit. And this? I didn't know Milton from Office Space was a Wolverine fan, nice watch dumbass.

 Re: Costumes @ SDCC 2009
You really think that Thor is "ok?" The worse, the better! It's more fun! Bad American Cosplay gives me hours of entertainment. Fat Boba Fett > Regular Boba Fett. Short Darth Vader > Normal Darth Vader. Little KISS > KISS. See? It's funnier to see warped versions! That's why Super Deformed stuff is awesome, it's Gundam, but as dwarves! AWESOME!
The best part of Comic Con is seeing all the bad cosplay. I once saw a Klingon in a wheel chair. I wasn't laughing cause' the dude was in a wheel chair, bad ass as far as I'm concerned that he had the balls to do it! I suppose, perhaps, it was considered his "Klingon War Chair" or something, but still, that guy was killer!
These people don't let things like height, weight and even mobility restrictions that would stop them in Hollywood stop them at conventions. So as far as I'm concerned, they're the real heroes of these conventions!

 Re: Costumes @ SDCC 2009
Phil - I think you posted pics here once... or I know someone posted pics of some amazing costume they had made. I can understand something like that a bit more, labour of love with proper artistic skills. But Thor? Really? Seriously? Come on. I have to agree with BD here and say that these failures of self awareness are brilliant, and I really enjoy them. But that doesn't get me any closer to understanding what the hell Magento was thinking when Spiderwoman and Thor invited him to join in their shiney lycra escapade in the deepest darkest realms of embarrassment. but you know, I do love it and would feel that my life was just a little less fullfilled if I didn't get to see these pics every year

I'll have to dig up a pic of the short, mustache'd, denim-clad Edward Scissorhands I saw at Dragon-Con last year. Dragon-Con cosplayers puts SDCC to SHAME!

Fucking Hordak unionizing his "Horde" and taking all the jobs up in Eternia. Just because Skeletor isn't "trained" doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to attack/annoy He-Man! He's plenty qualified!

I've met him at Dragon-Con, cool dude. He even has an OFFICIAL Star Wars "bust" done buy Gentle Giant, Lucas Approved. I think it was a prize for something. There's Darth Vader Elvis too.

 Re: Costumes @ SDCC 2009
Elvis Trooper is a good guy, I talked with him on occasion during my Boba Fett time, and as for Thor- I said he's ok because at least he's a big blonde white guy with a beard, and not a scrawny asian guy or something. And while I do appreciate the fun of looking at bad cosplay, I wonder what goes through their minds... I don't know bout you guys, but I have a sense of shame when in comes to something... =)

That LACK of sense and shame is what makes them great. NO RESERVATIONS! They're doing it because it's fun, they like it, and FUCK conventional thought! Who says Logan CAN'T be a 300 lbs. black woman? Who says Spock can't be a 4'6" Thai man? Who cares? THEY DON'T! It's why I love them. They don't give a FUCK! Gotta respect that.

I couldn't agree more! I was smiling all day long looking at some of these guys. One of my favorites I spotted was a 6'3' skinny 15 year old in a elaborate Stormtrooper costume all made from painted cardboard and string. I kicked myself for not bringing my camera.

It's a shame the world can't be like SDCC 52 weeks a year . . . catching the shuttle home and seeing a hot Wonder Woman wandering through the crowds, Indiana Jones catching the tram and a team of Lucha Libre sitting down to enjoy dinner should be the norm . . . it was rad (in the immortal words of Muton)

BD summed it up perfectly. That's why the Wolverine I posted is one of my favorites. Dude wasn't ripped w/ crazy hair and sideburns. But he wore a full costume to dress up as someone he likes. I mean, shoot, his claws were short and stumpy. But he posed w/o hesitation when I asked for a pic.

 Re: Costumes @ SDCC 2009
The transformers ones are impressive, but honestly the Astro-boy one accents my biggest peeves about Con costumes. Stupidly oversized costumes and props that make traveling around the jam-packed convention floor should not be allowed... there were tons of people with swords and lightsabers and props at NYCC that did nothing but get in the way, including some chump with a piece of shit looking cardboard and duct-tape attempt at some ginormous FF sword, that was constantly whapping into people behind him and just totally uncalled for.

Just you guys wait, one of these years I'm gonna make it out to SDCC and everyone's going to have to put up with an entire weekend of the Ayatollah of Rock n Rollah made out of stuff from the dollar store and some silver spray paint.
