The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus trailer (Wow, just wow)
The trailer for the latest Terry Gilliam film (aka Heath Ledger's final role), The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is online. Ledger died 1/3 of the way during filming, so other actors took over the role with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying transformations of Ledger's character as he travels through a dream world. I love anything that Gilliam does, but I have to say he appears to have outdone himself this time. The film looks absolutely amazing!

that does look pretty cool - not a fan of colin ferrel, though. I wonder if it'll play on a few more screens than Tideland did. Seems like that just went straight to video.

Big fan of Terry Gilliam, and the trailer does look good, but I'm always wary of films with a lot of CGI. Usually they rely on it to fill such fantastical story holes, and it makes me mad. Since this seems to be already based in a dream like world it might be good though. Lately though I can't drag myself to a theater and usually wait for DVD (if that).

Tideland was one of the worst films I ever saw in my life and deserved to never even make it to dvd, totally self indulgent and just worthless. After that I questioned if I would see anything else he did.

Yeah, this one is great.
Terry Gilliam is trying to film again with The Man Who Killed Don Quixote sans Johnny Depp.

I went to the Imaginarium panel with Terry Gilliam at Comic Con - was pretty interesting to hear him talk about the film. Showed lots of clips. Heath Ledger looked good in his role - seems that Colin Ferrel has just a smaller trade-out part for Ledger's character, as do Jude Law and Johnny Depp. And Tom Waits as the devil is awesome - perfect fit for him.

CCPfan wrote: Seems like that just went straight to video. It pretty much did. If I recall correctly it played for one week in one crappy theater here in San Francisco. The sad saga of that movie's pre-release demonization was the strangest case of "advance buzz" being totally wrong that I can think of. It seems like critics who saw the movie ahead of scheduled release dates transferred their frustrations about the Weinstein-compromised "Brothers Grimm" to "Tideland" and added a bunch of hyped-up puritanism to condemn the film as a morally objectionable piece of inscrutable indulgence, which killed potential distributorship deals. When it finally came out on DVD, it was plainly evident that it was Gilliam's most personal film, the only one on which he had complete creative control. It's a masterpiece, although it's definitely not "for everyone." Imaginarium looks like "classic" Gilliam, at least visually. It just kills me that even at this late hour, Gilliam still has so much trouble finding distributors for his movies. Anyway, it'll be a treat when we finally get to see it.

This is true, and tideland and lynch's inland empire show why artists need to have someone else controlling them at least to keep them in the lines. I actually would prefer to see the bros. grimm again than see any piece of tideland ever (and I have loved almost all of his films) Dean wrote: the only one on which he had complete creative control.

Re: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus trailer (Wow, just wow)
Hahah, well I won't argue with you audio, since taste is taste, but while I'm generally inclined to defend "Inland Empire" I totally agree that it would have helped to have someone there to slap Lynch down and get him to focus a little better. Like, edit about an hour of weak superfluous material out entirely. It could have been a stronger film. I can see why someone might say the same thing about "Tideland" but for whatever reasons, that one "worked' for me.
I listened to an interview with Gilliam recently, and while this might sound morbid, oddly enough Ledger's death may have made "Imaginarium" a better movie, since everyone involved was passionately dedicated to completing a quality film in his honor.
I hope he gets to make his La Mancha movie. It would be just his fate for that one to go all wonky the second time around, and never be finished. It might be like "Napoleon" for Kubrick ... the life's dream that just wasn't meant to be.

Re: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus trailer (Wow, just wow)
I'm a bitter grump, I'll be right out about it. SO when I see the names "Depp" "Ledger" "Law" etc I get a tingling sense of "uh-oh-I-hope-this-isn't-some-contrived-fake-art-crap!" even though I HONESTLY love Depp in most of his stuff (though lately I'll say he's been sucking butt) Law usually doesn't offend one way or the other and Ledger is someone I'd never given a chance and was proved wrong thanks to his "DK" role.
So, why still not trust this you ask? Because if I do, and it sucks, I won't lie to myself and be pissed that I had hope. If I have no hope, see it and it's GOOD, well surprise! I hope it's good, I love Gilliam too but haven't been impressed by him in a long time. I'd kind of like to see him pull back and do something less "visual" the way Burton did with "Big Fish" which I loved, then everything after that was just a CG orgy of ignorance built to sell shirts and purses at Hot Topic. It still had his style and a great story and SOME visuals, but wasn't RELIANT on it. I want to see Terry pull something like that off, some visuals are cool, but give me a good story first.
So, you know, "here's hoping" is my official stance on it.

Re: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus trailer (Wow, just wow)
When it became obvious that "Inland Empire" was meant to memorialize the hallucinations of a schizophrenic (entirely as she experienced them) the film seemed almost masterfully done.
An electric storm or electric lights flickering, or other electrical activity, would lead to a new line of hallucinations. Gladly a Hollywood studio didn't butcher it. Its certainly not for everyone or even most people.

This look good and I'll check it out...maybe not in theaters.
Tideland was a turd and a complete waste of time.

Re: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus trailer (Wow, just wow)
Looking forward to this movie, trailer looks great. I usually love Gilliam's films, even though a few did suck, or at least lose their way.
I did read that Depp, Law, and Ferrell to give their salaries this movie to Ledger's daughter. That's pretty cool of them.
