You can pick up everything on already released cd's, for much cheaper than what they're selling the new box set. Although you don't get the little boxset booklet with them.

The Beatles in mono remasters are available only through the box set.

Plus, it looks to me that if you were going to buy all of the new remastered stereo versions, you would actually save a few buck by buying the stereo box set too (based on Amazon's pricing).

It depends on how anal you are about how your music sounds. Can i ask you, do you own most of their stuff anyway? If so, why are you buying it all again? It's not as if it's the first time it's been re-issued. But if you can tell the subtle differences, i guess you had to have it.

Well, pretty much everyone on this board is anal to the nth degree, aren't they? Analism runs rampant here. Admit it or not.

And, yes, I am fairly anal about how my music sounds, within reason. I don't have super expensive equipment, but it ain't bad either. I have given up on buying $200 speaker cables and such, because I could NOT hear the difference that those were supposed to be making for me.

I do already own everything by the Beatles, including most of the original vinyl records that I bought a long time ago. For certain artists, I just want to know that I have the state-of-the-art version of their recordings. For those artists, I don't really think about it too much - I just buy it. And sometimes the differences aren't so subtle. And so far, I can't remember feeling screwed by buying the most recent remaster, whatever, on the basis that I don't hear at least some improvement in sound.

I am about ready to spring for the remastered Big Star stuff, even though I already have everything they have done... Just like some toy companies must love the people on this board who buy whatever gets put out, some record companies must love folks like me who do the same for certain artists.

This Mortal Coil revived interest and brought a whole new generation to the Big Star table.

I was (am) a big fan of the Posies, and also just happened to live in Columbia when Big Star reunited. That was a fantastic show and turned me into a Big Star fan for life.

Does anyone have the remastered albums? If so, is it worth spending more money?

Also, just found out there's a box set on the way in just a few days....whoa!

A friend loaned me the stereo set and I'm slowly getting my way through it. At first I found the new mixes a little jarring, just because they are different. Some things that previously sounded like, well, sounds now sound like very distinct instruments. I'm going to keep the older CD releases for contrast ... I sort of like their more compressed radio-like sound, but these new remasters are really amazing.

Thanks for posting the link to the clip. That was so cool.

I'm planning to pick up the new remix. It's all ear candy to me.

While we're on this subject if anyone hasn't seen it yet, check out the promo video for the Rock Band release. It's sweet psychedelic eye candy:

FWIW, there was a CD of Sinatra stereo remixes a year or so back. In stereo, the stuff sounds amazing. But in mono, they sound utterly awful. And I'm not talking the usual “Well, mono is mono...” bad... I mean, it sounds just filtered in a weird way. I have a nice mono Sony radio I hook my iPod up to so that’s how I discovered that.

So not too sure if anyone else will encounter this or it will affect this Beatles set the same way, but something to keep in mind. You might run into awkward sounding stuff unless it's on a decent stereo setup.

Yer all ingrates and don't deserve the Beatles, the Stones, the Pistols or the Clash . . . trading us for Country & Western and R&B was a piss poor deal! :D

R&B pre-dates any of those bands, and they all pinched from Motown too. The Pistols were a boy band, the Clash just ripped off the Ramones (poorly), the Beatles pee'd on each other instead of recognizing George more and the Stones don't know when to quit. You guys got Motorhead, Sabbath and Maiden though.

I hate politcs + music, I also don't enjoy a lot of the reggae/ska/dance hall influenced stuff they used a lot. I respect them, but just can't listen to much. I'd rather hear some heroine addicts love story from Queens. I was always that one asshole who all the other assholes got mad at when I said I didn't like the Clash, shit, even my MOM liked the Clash!
