Post CD Storage for a cluttered home? :)
Hi, I thought I'd ask my fellow collectors this question. I have some CD shelving, but its taking up some valuable wall space where another toy shelf could go.

Most of my CDs are now either on LP or MP3, so the discs don't actually have to remain "displayed" but I would like them to be accessible (not everything is on my computer or on vinyl).

What do you all use? I'd much rather use my limited wall space for toy & DVD shelving. Let me know if you have creative solutions.

Do you need to keep the original cases?

Since all my cd's are ripped to wav files, I threw out the cases and put the cd's in a bunch of these:

I stored the booklets with the cd's and the paper from the back of the cd cases are stacked and stored separately.

The only cases I still have are the cardboard / hand made / singles and box set boxes.

It saves so much space.

That's what I would have suggested if you weren't die hard to keep the cases.

yeah i can't imagine taking the cds out of the cases. That seems so gross (No offense!) :) I'm a stickler for packaging.

You need a shrink ray -
can also be used on other things.

I like my packaging, too. My cds are all stored in those under-bed storage containers. (mine have wheels under them). It's not ideal, but they are still accessible and they are out of sight.

these look very similar to the ones I use: http://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-18958004-67-Quart-Underbed-See-Through/dp/B001RCUNES/ref=pd_sbs_hg_3

I don't even use the lids. Just slide them out from under the bed like drawers

So refreshing! I can't imagine slotting CDs in a binder - I think I'd sooner sell them all, which I also couldn't do.
The only bad thing about getting my music from the library for the past year is that I don't have the physical CD and packaging. But these are the sacrifices that must be made for the time being.

I got some boxes from Borders (the actual ones they ship CDs in) and like UnderBeit put them under the bed.

you could mount a glass display case on the top stuffed full of dolls, like the case in the bottom right corner here,

then paint the sides like this,

or just use the sides to display your band badge/button collection- I'm sure you have one of those!

Anyone have ideas for dvd storage? I have about 600 dvd's and just moved from a place that had built-in book cases to not having any bookcases.

We have about this many DVDs too-We actually use these shelves from Best Buy: (4 of them)

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 4768131733

I had a brainstorm to set them up back to back "video store" style, so they only take up about a foot of wall space. :) We have the shorter one (shorter by one shelf length). We should have gotten this bigger size though, because we keep filling them.

Thanks, I'll look into those.

I'm thinking about building some bookcases, but that will be a little while off.

Yeah, I know this POV has already been poo-poo'ed, but converting all of my CDs to MP3s and then flipping them on eBay was one of the best things I have ever personally done collection-wise. Not for everyone, but I even did that with DVDs and have not regretted it.

More room for other stuff.

i got to where i hated seeing all my dvd cases everywhere

now i just keep the cases in boxes in the attic and put the dvd discs in plastic sleeves which i have in nice boxes from ikea on my bookshelf downstairs

discs are very easy to get to, all in the order i want, and the cases can be retrieved if i ever need them for anything relatively easily
