Post Re: Nightmare on Elm Street (remake) trailer
You know what the real worst part about these remakes are? They lose any sense of humor the original film might have had, and it's all filtered through some dour/over-dramatic "Look, this is a more serious film..." filter.

Can't wait for them to do some stedi-cam, dour/serious version of "Barney Miller."

Oh and as far as E.T. goes, the best way to re-watch it is to get the Spanish dubbed version. His screams are clearly "Aieeeee!" and there's a lot of "Telephono mi casa!" in that.

Exactly.

13th and Nightmare both had a off sense of humor and a its bad but I love it aspect to them. The remakes always try to come across as "this is the scariest thing you've seen even though its about a pedophile killer that was burned by crazy parents and came back to haunt their children's dreams" seriousness.

hollywood isnt out of ideas. its just much easier for a studio to greenlight a project that already has a history of turning into a big franchise, that way they can consistently pump out 3 or more movies and turn big profits... most of these horror remakes cost very little to make and they 100s of millions.

you want good, new and fresh ideas? you need to look at the independents who care slightly less about the money.

I could rant on and on about how remakes suck or are at least boring. But I'd rather present a list of movies I'd LOVE to see remade vs. what's actually being remade:

- Star Wars Episodes 1-3 (not directed or written by Lucas)
- Sorority Babes in Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (just to get people to check out the old one)
- Running Man (done more like the actual book, though I LOVE Ah-nolds version too)

Absolutely, thank you.

A great place to check out international independent (as well as classic studio) movies is The Auteurs, a really cool project sponsored by The Criterion Collection. Only costs five bucks to view a film, although many are free (including some that you'd have to pay to see at the regular Criterion site.) Many films at the site aren't available on DVD in Region 1 (if at all.) They add new ones each week and are seeking deals for online rights to hundreds more new and classic films. The few I've viewed so far have all been excellent and well worth the time. Nice antidote to multiplex mainstream fare.

Schindler's List On Ice.

I actually thought of that back when it came out and I was 12. I blame Mel Brooks for making me think such things.

i don't know if it is that they care less about the money, they just don't have the money to buy the rights to pre-existing franchises. so, for them, fresh ideas are cheaper.

Speaking of remakes, the new movie "The Box" is a remake of a twilight Zone episode. They give no credit though

You can watch the Twilight Zone episode "Button, Button" here (it's in 2 parts)...

PART 2

For some reason I'm curious about the movie.

I think as obvious as this is, it's an often overlooked or disregarded point. The fact is that for every remake or sequel they don't have to fuck about with market research or audience testing, much much less money is spent on the preproduction and even less on the marketing end.
A sequel or remake is money in the bank, which is why films such as Plan 9 or I Spit on Your Grave get the go ahead - to the dismay of millions, but for the millions.
I honestly can not think of any 2 films less suited to a remake than those two and I think it shows just how out of touch the studios are with reality when it comes to making money.
Like with Trick r Treat, they never thought it would make money, so they shelved it, now since it's release and all the rave reviews and word of mouth, hopefully there is a chance that we may see this wave of remakes stemmed.... if only a little.

I'm less offended by reboots, not that they are any different, and I see Elm St as a reboot. Different interpretations are ok by me.

And yes, as was stated earlier, remakes have always been here.
Frankenstein 1910, 1931
Student of Prague 1913, 1926
Jekyll & Hyde 1908, 1912, 1913, 1920 x 2, 1931, 1941... ('20 & '31 being the best)

there are others, but those jump to mind
And there's Der Golem, but that was sort of a series... sort of. I'm not a huge fan of Der Golem.

yeah... seriously, like there needs to be a glossy hollywood version starring Megan Fox.

It's been discussed, whether they will or not is another matter, but the fact that it's even been put on the table is bad enough.

When I watched the remake of "last house on the left" that rape scene was pretty fucked up and made my girl leave the room. That will be nothing compared to the rape scene in this if its gets remade. I enjoy female revenge movies, usually they are the best. But I really dont care to watch women getting rapped just to make the ultimate revenge movie. The original was enough and if you want to see a movie with this kind of plot line this is good enough. There are tons of old low budget movies that can be remade first if you ask me.
