Well if it's a rare limited japanese toy, and someone on the other side of the pacific wants to cash in we're the dickhead's to feed it to.....

Seriously haven't we been down this road before? Bemon, Anraku, now Nag, you'd think people would be wise to it by now. At least Anraku looks like someone made an effort to sculpt it. This Nag really does look like something I pooped out the other day.

If you print "U.S.A." on that, I might be interested.

I was never a fan of Bemon and Anraku's stuff, so I guess I'm not the target market for this. Don't get me wrong, I dig crudeness. I appreciate the crudeness of old Bullmark toys, but I think the sculptor of this stuff has deliberately pushed the crudeness factor to the point where it's just crudeness for crudeness' sake. It looks like it's made of mud. Not my thing.

Bingo. "They like Bemon? Cool, we'll give 'em another crude toy."

Plus regardless of whatever the actual facts of the thing's origins are, the perception that it was created (or at least marketed) with more cynicism than artistry has every reason to exist. I definitely see why some think it's cool and attractive but for me the manipulation involved quickly killed the appeal. Sorry to be so negative but I think that's how it went for a lot of people.

I'm glad we are back to discussing the actual toy.
A lot of people make the Bemon comment.
I've warmed to the Bemon, but it's never been a favorite of mine.
I actually really like the NNN figure though. Though crude I think there is an expressiveness in the face of this figure that you don't see so often. The articulated joints in the arms totally sold me on it. Someone's pic of it covering it's face with it's hands. Sold!
Anyway.. it's hard not to make the comparison, but I think it stands on it's own.

Gotta make it past 30 pages and 25,000 views

"If I want to buy something I don't care what someone says to me. I'm buying it for me, not for them.
If I cared what they thought, I would say to them before I bought it, "Do you think I should buy this?" and in that case, I'd be a moron.

Pinch of salt with any of the above anyone?

I really didn't want to come back to this again -
and most of the criticism on the last couple of pages
was from people who don't like the figure anyway -
but NagNagNag has no voice on this board himself
and there are two sides to every story, so here goes.

I DON'T KNOW the whole truth of what happened
so some of what I'm about to say MAY BE WRONG,
but there are definitely a few inconsistencies between the two sides here.

Then why did you respond?

First of all there is NO "campaign".
Who started calling it that?
Trolls everywhere! >:<

About the price:
Greg says he kept one, two other people were given one, and seven were sold.
Well, if that's right, that's $300 that was passed on to the consumer.
That's $40+ dollars extra per figure right there on the ones that were sold.

Thanks Mr. Wizard. I am sorry you werent one of the ones to get one. I think its fair that my translator and the guy who set up the meeting got one.

There were bank charges at BOTH ends, so you can at least double the $25 NNN lost there
(I think the Japanese banks maybe charge more?)

Huh? He only told me he lost 2500 yen. It cost me $45USD to make the wire, I didnt charge him for this. So this actually adds to the cost of the figure.

And, yes, a professional would know that there would be bank charges.
A professional would know that and pay them, or at least offer to,
not just ignore emails about the discrepancy.

I didnt ignore any emails. He refused to deal with my translator any more and Brian didnt want to get involved after one email. Maybe I should of hired you.

This was NNN's first International deal on any level - he did not know.

Now he does.

A professional would also honor any additional commitments he made in connection with the deal in due time,
not scramble around trying to fulfil them once the shit hit the fans.
(In fact, a professional would not make commitments he couldn't fulfil in the first place).

I did honor it. I didnt say I had one in hand. I said I PROMISE i will get you one, and I did, it just took me a bit longer than expected.

I also saw the email to Paul Kaiju you mention, and I think you've overdramatized it.
Semantics, but : he wasn't "told" to "cap" his price,
he was "asked" if $200 was "OK".

What was he supposed to say, NO, and not get to do the figure? He started threatening us that he wasnt going to send it, maybe he did the same to Paul.

If anything, the two prices should maybe have been the other way round.
I mean, at least Paul painted his.
Mishka basically got a finished product.

We would have painted ours, but we liked NNN aesthetic. Plus Lamour probably would have RUINED it.

The thing about the Header Cards sounds almost the EXACT OPPOSITE of how I heard it,
(and this version makes more sense to me precisely because I know Lamour loved the figure.)
I actually heard it was Mishka who insisted on making their own Header card, against NNN's wishes,
and that it was NNN who wanted them printed in Japan as he has some connection with a Printer.
The part about the to-ing & fro-ing over the writing is correct,
and at some point I lost track so I don't know the final outcome but
again, I'm pretty sure it was NNN's initial plan (maybe Mishka's too) that they would indeed receive
a bagged & carded, finished product from Japan.

This is where you are ABSOLUTELY wrong. haha. So wrong. If you were at the dinner you would have known but you werent. You self admittingly stated you MAY BE wrong, and you are.

Greg Mishka wrote:
He asked if he could use the header card for future releases. We told him this was OK, but any release he used that header for we asked that we receive at least (1) figure for release and basically a payment for use of the art. We thought this was more than fair.
O RLY?
I've no idea what normal copyright payment would be in a case like this,
but that seems over the top to me.

(1) figure is over the top?! Well he wanted to use it for FREE and not pay ANYTHING, fair?

Lastly, semantics again, but 'manko' means 'pussy' as in, um, 'pussy'.
Yes, it is used as a bad word in Japanese,
but only in the same way as 'c*nt'.
It doesn't mean 'pussy' as in cowardly or nervous -
that 'pussy' comes from 'pussycat' of course,
but I'm British, and we don't use it like that either.
It is a fighting word, but that never occurred to me at the time
... I honestly just thought it was funny.

(Btw, it was just something I knocked up in MSPaint.
It really needs proper shooping, but you can use it if you like Greg!
I think it would make a great T-shirt. 8D/ )

Like I said it was funny. If I use it ill send you a free t-shirt.

And after ALL THE ABOVE is said - Pogue ... Nail On Head :

That new one is sweet, bleeding manko version. Awesome.

Anybody willing to burn bridges and shake shit up is cool in my book. Just like all these boutique toy makers, he should be able to run his company as he see fits, even if that is to the ground.
