Midnight in the Garden of Good & Steven
So I'm probably jumping the gun a little here but I just finished up this dude for ICFSB:II and I'm pretty excited about the show. The last ICFSB was a ton of fun and I'm hoping this one will be even better. Steven's dyed purple, sprayed with light grey & black, speckled with black & white, and the details are done by hand. A nice, heavy clear coat shined him up and finished him off. Hope you guys like him and thanks for looking.

Excellent job! I'm really impressed you did all that fine line work. Even Bwana doesn't do that on his customs. lol.

Re: Midnight in the Garden of Good & Steven
Just wondering, did you use some sort of mask to paint the black circles on the eyes, or is that freehand?

This was a definitely a challenge and I was nervous that he'd end up with the "crazy eyes" that tend to plague some toys. But, after lots of practice on paper, I think they came out pretty good on the toy itself. And hey, thanks for the comments, everybody! I'm really looking forward to meeting the folks who can make it to the show and seeing all the customs everyone submits.

Fantastic work! I am really impressed by this custom. As everyone before me has pointed out, great contrast on the eyes. I also dig the speckled white and black.

REdYOdA wrote: ...though I do tend to love my toys that have cases of "crazy eye". Sometimes the "crazy eye" can be charming, I agree. When you imagine some dude painting eyes on say a hundred toys it's pretty easy to see how a few "crazies" would slip in there. However, when it comes to customs, I like to see a certain amount of control/intent. I also like to see subtle traces of artist's hand in the piece. I strive to make my customs meet the expectations I have in that respect. This tends to happen with varying degrees of success, but each time I work on a new figure, I learn a bunch of stuff. It's the learning process (along with the physical act of painting on weird little monsters) that I really enjoy anyways so it kinda works out for me.

I'm the same when it comes to customs...though I have made a couple of crazies unintentionally. Has there ever been a 'Post Your Crazy Eye' thread?

Rarely, you'll luck out and get a good kind of crazy. I think anybody that's ever attempted to paint on a toy quickly learns that one of the fastest ways to fuck up an otherwise awesome paintjob is to blow it on the eyes. As Lee put it, "eyes can be a Snickers bar."

Re: Midnight in the Garden of Good & Steven
I still have alot of trouble avoiding crazy eyes when painting miniatures, but I think on the much larger canvas of a kaiju I've been able to pull it off. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I paint so many Eyezons... then they're ALL crazy eyes!
You did a really fantastic job on this guy... the color combination is so simple and well executed that it really shines!

Re: Midnight in the Garden of Good & Steven
Definitely one of the best STB customs I've seen to date. Purple works really well on this little dude.
