Has anyone else seen this movie? I really want to see it and have been fretting here in Buffalo because as usual we never get any decent movies. Apparently it has a full release here stateside on Dec 18th. I like Viggio Mortensen and it has to way better than that 2012 crap that I refuse to see. Anyone see it here? Crap?

Can't wait to see it. First McCarthy book I read and was really moved by it (having a young son myself made it even more powerful for me). Would like to see more McCarthy stories on the big screen if this is done well. Blood Meridian would be intense.

My first McCarthy book too. Read it in two sittings...I was really blown away by it and has become one of my all time favorite books.

It started here in Seattle at T-giving & has gotten good reviews here & elsewhere. The dialogue in the book is so minimal & so much is internalized, I am curious to see how it translates as a movie. Glad to hear they leave the 'why' of the world's condition undefined.

Blazed through the book in a day during the spring, been waiting on the movie forever. They delayed the release of it because they felt it was too depressing.

I talked to someone who saw a test screening and from what I can tell, there's already one scene filmed that they kept out of the final cut ("I want my babyback babyback babyback babyback..."), and Charlize Theron apparently appears all throughout the movie.

I hope they don't fuck it up, but I wonder if the book is unfilmable.

A couple of reliable pals assured me the movie is well worth seeing. At first, I thought what you did, Roger, that this book is/was "unfilmable". In fact, "No Country..." is one of my favorite pictures, and seemed to me like the only Cormac that COULD be filmed. Alas, "The Road" came highly recommended to me, if, for nothing else, the scenery is supposedly awesome; the acting is supposedly fantastic, and the ending supposedly unforgettable. Now, that is a lot of "supposeds" for me, but once it starts playing in Portland, you can be sure I'll be there!!

I knew it! This stupid Christmas holiday really messes everything up! I was just telling my girlfriend that I bet they thought it was too depressing to release around the holidays. Still even if the powers that be think it too depressing in general, let people like me, who think most Hollywood films dribble, have something to look forward to!

You could have a 'Road' themed Christmas Day. Everyone could go see it and then sit down to a feast of expired potted meat products!

I believe the film was finished a year ago, and they were delaying the release because of the economic downturn.

I thought it was crap although the performances were good.

I loved the book. I loved the Cohen brothers interpretation of No country for old men...but I hated the Road simply because of the music. In No country..there was no music, lots of tension and it was just really well done. In this movie I was always aware of the background music.

The book was desolate and bleak and I really wanted that to echo throughout the movie. However, I was completely cognizant of the musical scores and I found it distracting.

Interesting comment. I know Nick Cave & fellow Badseed Warren Ellis did the soundtrack (probably b/c they worked w/ the director on The Proposition). I liked their work on The Assasination of Jesse James et al.
But I know what you mean. I watched Fanny & Alexander last week and was noticing how nice it was not having the usual Hollywood manipulative 'emotion track'.

Yeah don't get me wrong. I think it's pretty faithful in terms of the book. I just didn't expect music. Had I known that in advance maybe I would have thought differently.

This has nothing to do with The Road, but maybe someone has the same problem I have with the Blu-Ray of "No Country..." I have a Philips Blu-Ray player, and the parental control setting is on 8 (Adult), but my disc will not play. Instead, the disc message says, "Due to the parental settings of your play, this disc will not play." Huh?

You need a note from your parents.

If you are referring to the food smorgasbord, in the basement of the house chapter Roger ie; "babyback, babyback, I hope it isn't cut out, I'd like to see how they interpert that scene.
That was a really vivid and creepy part of the book. No cliches in the actions of our main characters there...at least not in the book and that's what I liked about it.

No, the basement scene is still there. You can see a little bit of it in the clips on IMDB. I was referring to another scene.

I think Roger is referring to the scene in the book where the cannibals eat the baby. (That scene is not in the movie.)

I didn't want to come right out and spoil it, but yes, that's what I'm talking about. The scene was filmed (you can see a credit for "Baby Eater" on IMDB) but according to my friend who saw the movie, the scene is not in there. Bummer.

They left out the baby scene and only 3 lines of dialogue from the book.

Pretty good if you ask me for a Hollywood book to movie translation.

Oh, odd. That scene was described by some critics so evidently it was included in earlier cuts of the film.

Well the book was masterful, one that I'd normally think couldn't be translated well to screen, because as is true with most good books, it was about much more than just the "story" narrative. However the buzz on the movie has been exceptional. Very excited to see it when it opens here.

So I did see the Road last night. I have to say it felt a little disjointed and slow. While I think it definitely is worth seeing, I thought that how the Man suddenly seems ill and dies is a bit of a cop out do to film time constraints. Also I doubt I would have ever left that underground shelter. All in all though considering the other crap out there right now, definitely see it. I think I really need to read the book though...

That was relatively abrupt in the book too, although I suspect most readers saw it coming.

I think that the book ended on a note that wasn't without hope, or at least a bit of light in the midst of all-pervasive tragedy. I'm tempted to be more specific but this thread already has too many spoilers. Looking forward to the film. At this point I'd see just about anything Viggo is in. He's always sincere.

Hoping the wife got me the book for Christmas! Looking forward to the movie.
