OUCH! I actually think that idea for a GL series would rule!

ps- ROTJ rules, Muppets rule, "down endings" are cliche' (though I love ESB almost as much as ROTJ, the usual rip-off-kevin-smith-excuses for liking ESB more are so lame/overused) and I guess we should get back on the topic of Batman.

Back on the topic of Batman and looking underneath the hood, his story has a very obvious primal appeal, the idea of vigilante justice, and one can understand why he's had so many movies and TV series.

Bringing it back to Green Lantern (;p), I don't see any theme in there that would resonate with an audience as strongly as something like Batman or Iron Man or X-Men did. A guy gets a magic ring that lets him do almost anything he can imagine (provided he's not fighting something yellow, like dandelions). Can someone who's a fan explain the appeal to me?

I guess you would have to look at GL's like you would Jedi.To a normal person they may seem all powerfull, but their power is based on their ability to impose and use their will. They have to be the most focused and steely group of people, because the way I see it, any errant thought or letting their emotions get the best of them could cause the ring to do unpredictable things and weaken their power.Gl's , until recently, arent allowed to use the rings power to kill. They arent just some all powerfull superman, they are apart of a Corps and a cause greater than their own. I think if done right a GL series of films could attract audiences the same way Star Wars, 300 and LOTR has.

The appeal is, is the ring chooses you because it believes you to be a person of the finest "moral" fiber or "truly good." None of us are, humans at least, but the ring must choose. It chooses Hal Jordan.

Is he really? It's more internal, he battles with the idea, is he even close to being that? That's such a high standard. Can he, or any of us, live up to that?

The themes would be 1- What is truly good and evil? and 2- Are we, any of us, even close to that? What standards do we set to even attempt to accomplish that? And once that kind of power is put into someones hands do they become something else?(Sinestro) Can they change, become evil/bad etc?

It's all pretty base stuff, but it's what hero stories have had as a part of them for ages. Being good, Batman DECIDES he is, Superman ATTEMPTS to be, Green Lantern is TOLD he is. But is he really? That's, at least, where I find appeal.

That clarifies things, I can see how it could work. Thanks for explaining it.

OK, So I just watched it. A few things:

1- I'll eat my words, Ledger was not the worst thing in the world. He was good. "Great?" No, I actually think I credit the writing and directing on the "great" part when it comes to the Joker in this. But I liked him.

2- I don't think this was the ultimate #1 most bad-ass comic/super-hero movie ever. I think, for me, a big thing is, is that I've seen this movie in a sense. I've read all of those Batman stories, so to me it's just another Batman story on the big screen.

The themes and morals and overall thoughts this movie brought forth are nothing new to me as a Batman fan. I even think MANY of them were brought up in Burton's 2 "Batman" films but due to overall "comic-booky-feel" they had they were forgotten and dismissed and hidden behind toys and kitch and Prince, but they were most certainly there. What this movie did was make it actually marketable to adults who DON'T read comics.

Anyway, blah blah blah, I really enjoyed it. I still think "Returns" was better, I liked it AS MUCH as "Iron Man" and it was, overall, more than I hoped for.

Necropost. I didn't think this should go in the latest batman thread.

For those who haven't seen, the Joker was modeled after Tom Waits.
