Oh, I have no idea - this is just what he told me. He'll be bummed if the iPad can't do live video...he's a big fan of Apple products.

As long as both machines can use Skype or iChat, it's all good.

 Re: Apple iPad
It's so weird watching Apple's promo videos and seeing a former boss in them. I'm sure it's even weirder for him. He hates doing those things but when Steve says "do it" ya gotta do it. I think the disappointment expressed by a lot of people regarding this release is due to false expectations being set by the trade media and blogs. The company didn't hype it prior to the release. It's a good device, a tremendous amount of work went into it. A lot of the complaining that I've seen is very uninformed and unfair. People seem to think that it's supposed to be PC rather than something else and don't have a clue just how expensive consumer electronics of this calibre are to pull off. For me the main drawback is the LCD screen. Love it on my iMac but I'd want to use the iPad as an e-reader, and I'm not sure the LCD solution is acceptable for that. If they could do something like what the old Sony reader and Kindle II has without Kindle's atrocious design, it'd be more attractive as a reader, however everything else (apps, web, movies) would look like crap. Gotta be some middle ground down the line. If I were a business traveller I'd buy it in a hot second. So great for bringing your own movies along.

 Re: Apple iPad
Yeah many people have been negative about iPad's apparent lack of this and that. I think its due to what they think Apple "should" have released as functionality (with so much build up of excitement through rumors and such) much like when iPhone first released with people saying, "what no MMS, no flash..." etc. But it still made it, why? When you actually use it you realize all the added value is in the user experience. If you have time to read the blogs from people that actuallly used it on the day of announcement, everyone was talking about the speed and how MT fast it is. Regarding flash (sorry if its already been discussed) Adobe refuses to fix their plug-in so it doesn't hog the CPU when loading. With my MacbookPro it basically stalls everything everytime it loads. It clashes too much with OSX. Apples main goal is user experience, so taking flash out must have been hard but they rather have a smooth running machine than major crashes. There is HTML5 which is gonna replace flash sooner or later. Youtube and Vimeo have adopted it already I believe. Adobe should be scared, cos flash will be become obselete real soon if they don't fix it so its better compatibility. More here: http://blogs.adobe.com/flashplatform/20 ... _link.htmlI basically have a software to switch off flash when I load up pages. All the useless flash based ads basically stops surfing experience. Its not even a large loading issue...just plain shit programming on Adobe's part. Go to Adobe's blog and you will see that side of the argument, with many people pissed off with Adobe more than Apple. Engadget readers arre possibly large part potential switchers to the Mac and they might not know the true story. That said, I need a machine I can read my comics and books on. Right now I can do this on my iPhone but the scrolling is driving me nuts for full page comics I have to scroll etc.

 Re: Apple iPad
I read my comics on a maxhine called "comic books." It works pretty good. I've never seen a faster load time honestly, though the images can be easily corrupted by things like water or chocolate milk. Still pretty tight though. Sadly I can play games with them, unless I cut them into strips, fold them into triangles and use them for table football, but than I can read them again after that. Despite all the bugs, I like "comic books" and think they're honestly a fine replacement for any other comic book reading machines.

The name "iPad" is derivative, and sounds like a feminine hygiene product, plus everyone just bought an iPhone. I think the marketing will be a big issue with this thing.

 Re: Apple iPad
I'll never get an iPad because it simply does not meet my needs, but Apple has approached this with due caution. It's a first gen device, no need to go all out and have every feature possible because they'll have nothing new to release in the second gen to warrant Apple users buying another one. It's not supposed to replace the MacBooks so there's no point for them to have full computing abilities either.
It's a lot like the iPhone, they're not going to give you 3GS for $199 when they can charge you the same for the first gen. The upgrades were minimal for the iPhone and I suspect iPad won't satisfy some of the wants until the 3rd or 4th generations as well. Apple's success in my mind has been in their ability to get customers repurchasing a similar product in a short time span. And kudos to them, their products look incredible enough to warrant that from the average consumer.

 Re: Apple iPad
For those that want multi-tasking, there's already an iPhone hack. Just go to the Cydia app (iPhone developer's community) and download the hack for it. I am sure some tech wizard will be eagerly releasing a hack for the iPad.
I can bet you that the iPad will sell like hotcakes. Not only from consumers like us, but also in education and businesses like couriers, hospitals, scientists, architects etc.

 Re: Apple iPad
A lot of people say that, I like my paper.
Overall I have no use for one of these pads and don't think I ever will but I'm one of "those" dudes who didn't have a cell phone until 4 months ago (prepaid cheapo even when I did.) I love technology but only when I really need it (need being relative, I know.) It'd be fun to see what something like this will eventually do though, I'm all for more of this shiney useless junk, I just consider myself more of a spectator so no need for me to buy.

I read comics on my iphone using Comiczeal. There is a desktop version where you drag your folder of scanned comics and it reduces them to a smaller size and then syncs with the iphone. This is one good reason for me to buy the iPad. I also read novels too using Stanza..its just as good as that iBooks Apple created.

I keep thinking about using the ipad with a wall mounted 27" iMac. If you could use the iPad as a control device you would have an amazing media set up. Bye Bye comcast for good.

I hadn't really thought about that aspect. I have far too much space taken up by longboxes in my house (30-40 of the bastards). Perhaps I will look into the iPad. I used to have a Mac mini hooked up to my 50" Sony LCD that I used for a HTPC and it worked great! That was a few years ago and before all the streaming content that is out there now. Today I use my Bluray player to stream Netflix and content from my PC...love it!

 Re: Apple iPad
If you're going to create a media center, I highly recommend using a Mac Mini + a screen instead of an iMac. If the screen busts, you can get a new one and not worry about the "brains" behind the setup. Same way the other way around; you can always upgrade your Mac Mini to a newer/faster model without remounting the display.
And I just scored a "bottom of the line" Mac Mini as a refurb for $499 that is more powerful and has more storage than the older Mac Mini I similarly scored 2 years back for about $699. The quality and price can't be beat.

 Re: Apple iPad
Can a Mac Mini be plugged into any TV? I have a plasma TV with a PC socket in the back. I have a WD TV now, and just copy files into an external...but it can't read all the formats, especially new lasterst AC3 Dolby digital sound...
