Akira's a bit weird for me, I suspect like most people (especially in the UK) around my age it was one of the first proper anime films that you watched. Because of that its been put on a pedestal and should never be tarnished.

Its merely ok.

Nowhere near as good as the manga either.

Or as good as Urotsukidōji...

urotsukidoji was really cool in the first video, but it started to get kind of crappy towards the end to me. I wasn't digging where the story went and the animation quality started to worsen. it's been a while since I've watched it though. still...it was definitely something that stays with you long after you watch it.

Honestly, to get your hopes up is to say Hollywood is trustworthy with beloved institution .
It's not and the movie will suck. We are likely to get some sort of Michael Bay commercial monstrosity .

Bummer because I honestly hold the OG dubbed version very close to my heart. James Flinders was the man. Just saying.

This movie will only piss me off because of the people who will see it who've never seen the original and than will love it and go watch the original and be all "I love the original more but cmon the live action one isn't bad" or those who've seen the original but have poor taste and will be all "I loved the remake, not as good, but still I loved it because to be a TRUE fan means I have to, right? TELL ME WHAT TO THINK!"

Otherwise I have no opinion. Nothing's untouchable by Hollywood, who cares? It won't make the original manga or animated film any WORSE! Things like this just breed out annoying fanboys more and that's really the only thing I dislike about big Hollywood remakes. On their own I know they'll suck so I either steer clear or watch for laughs. Just because it's made doesn't discredit the source material OR mean that I can't have a few good laughs at it's horrid attempt.

Didn't we have this thread already?

This.

Plus, the original wont cease to exsist after the remake/live action comes out, you can still watch it anytime.

Post Re: Live Action Akira Remake
I tried to take my eight year old nephew to see the Dragon Ball remake and the whole time some asshole fanboys in the theater kept shouting about how their childhood was being "Raped." What a shame. What a cliche.

As far as the Akira remake goes, the original anime was a technological and artistic achievement that, thankfully, didn't ruin the manga for me. That's about it. Anyone not familiar with the manga can only support the argument in favor of the anime being a visceral experience, because the story is thin at best. I always felt like it became an instant sacred cow because of the unprecedented push it got stateside, combined with it's outlandishness, so this news doesn't phase me.

Whatever your take, remember to show some class in the theaters.

Yes I agree. Been avoiding the movie theatres due to obnoxious people. As for the Akira movie I dunno. Wait and see but not at full price.

You guys can think what you want, but as soon as I read "set in NY" I got a little sick to my stomach, and my stomach is literally burning as I type this... I saw the movie before I hunted down the Manga, and yes the Manga was better but it was still the same story... If you've seen the movie From Hell and you've read the book From Hell you see how the Hughes Brothers handle adaptations... Poorly. Yes I will go see it, but I'll feel the same way inside that I do with almost every mainstream movie that comes out nowdays: Why am I doing this to myself?

Haha, what, the guys who did From Hell are doing this? It might be worth it just for comic value but changing the setting is already a bit much.

The only thing that would make this "better" is if Uwe Boll directed it.

Tell me about it, what can Uwe Boll do wrong?

Seriously though, obviously I want them to go nowhere near Akira, or any other move that has already been made for that matter. The sad truth is though, I have been trying to get a lot of people turned on to old anime like Akira, and those who have grown up in the post-90s world of all CGI effects and computer animation, with overly-stylised anime just don't dig it.

[Sigh] Hollywood, were you ever any good? :?

I stopped trying to turn people onto old Anime. People don't appreciate 80's Anime/Manga like I do because I grew up watching that stuff. If you didn't get exposed to the original Guyver series, Bubblegum Crisis, Ranma, etc when you were in your early teens your not going to appreicate it now.

Oh please, if some youngun' claims to "love anime" and hasn't seen or dislikes Akira (or other earlier classics) they don't count. It'd be like being into metal and NOT being into Maiden or Sabbath (at least ONE of them!) "It's before your time" holds no water to me. I was into plenty of shit before my time when I was a teen, almost exclusively even and with no one to show me and no internet to guide me. I don't think it's generational, those particular people just suck most likely.

Nope you read it wrong. I said that I think the individual needs to be younger. I think if person A saw something when they were 15 instead of 28 for the first time, the 15 year old would enjoy it more and then appreciate it at 28, I know I do.

not a facebooker, but figured i'd post this here

Quote:
Racebending.com is creating this event page to track the number of media consumers and fans who want to send a clear message to Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures, and the production of AKIRA: Don't Whitewash Akira!

On March 21st, 2011, Deadline.com reported that eight actors have been solicited for the roles of Tetsuo and Kaneda in AKIRA. All of the actors solicited were white. If not in a film called Akira, for characters named Kaneda and Tetsuo, when will Asian Americans get to star in a Warner Bros film?

Me am not read good.

I can't say, I don't know any peer's who haven't seen/enjoy/respect Akira. I mean there are coworkers, but I by "peers" I mean "dorks". My coworkers, at any age of their lives, probably wouldn't have been into Akira. I do know people who didn't see Akira until they were in their 20's and they love it, but it's their type of "thing" I guess. It just passed them by. There's all sorts of junk I should've seen when I was 15 but didn't. It happens. But it's hard to say if I'd appreciate it more or less.

I've seen the reverse, like someone gets into something hard when they're in their 20's and all the people who saw it in their teens are like "whatever dude, it's cool and all but it's passed, nice of you to catch up HAR HAR!"

Absolutely, me and my girlfriend watched Akira in the theater last night (for Mondo's Mystery Movie for Tyler Stout's birthday) and she watches plenty of sci-fi & such with me, but she just didn't grasp the movie. She was flustered with the idea of having no explanation for Tetsuo's powers, and some other details of the storyline, but still enjoyed the movie - she just didn't love it. It was my first time to see the film on a big screen, and was the first start-to-finish for me since I was young. It's so nice watching it that way, rather than English dubbed on the SciFi channel in the 90's

After having seen it, she agrees that it's not exactly a story that feels tellable with live action. With CGI replacing animatronics and true special effects, I would absolutely not watch a modern live action adaptation. I'm just not interested in watching what my grandmother calls "video game graphics" in my movies instead of real live physical effects - but visual effects aside and I'm still not often excited for a film adaptation of an animation or comic/manga.

By no exaggeration, the print is at least 100x more impressive in person. Especially the metallic variant - I really wanted to pick one of the variants up but didn't manage to. The metallic ink used on it was quite different from the metallics I'm used to seeing on Mondo's variants. It was more pearlescent than simply reflective metallic, insanely nice - and that's just from what I could make out from it in a dark theater with only some lighting.

Apparently I was the only one to get video from the event, you can check out the show intro here, and the post-movie / print intro here.

And I scored for a friend who's head will presumably "E.X.P.L.O.D.E." when he gets it.
