I wish the Belchor showed up more often in the newer pieces released; I love the design of it and don't have one myself.

A Bandai vinyl Super Robot T-28, one of the first toys I purchased from Pony Toy-Go-Round, probably around 1988 or '89. I had gone in there several times before, drooling over the cool stuff, but this was the first thing for which I actually coughed up the shekels. After that I found Kimono My House, all downhill from there.

I'm old.

Really though, the Shogun Warriors toys I had as a kid were the real gateway drug, it just took a few more years to kick in.

I lived in Asia from 1999 to 2005 (HK, Japan, Taiwan...) and I wish I could say I was collecting then. I was even hanging with toy designers... But no, I was into indie music, and the only toys I was collecting were SD Gundams. They were small and cheap. I started collecting designer toys in 2004, opened a store in 2007, joined skullbrain the same year (I think...), didn't understand, lost my account info, and after about 10 years of constant exposure, got my first proper kaiju in early 2009:

Image

...then I rejoined skullbrain, got a proper job, and started mindlessly collecting again... Not sure if I'm thankful, but I'm happy.

(Of course, that's assuming we don't include Itokin Park, Kaijin or Bounty Hunter in the "kaiju" category... which would put my turning point a few years before...)

the skullwing.

It was late 2006 or early 2007 because I was in the middle of building a replica Boba Fett costume, and I was into some designer toys, when I had saw KFGUs, and that sparked my interest... But then I saw this skullwing and had to have it.

I probably paid more then I should have for it, but I don't regret it at all. SB is still my favorite Fight Figures!

Love at first sight, without understanding why. Can't get the damn chickens off my mind since..
Didn't even how to spell kaiju, what Super7 was or that it was only a few blocks away loaded with more awesomeness.

By now, I've become obsessed with vintage Bullmarks, NagNags and Gogas, like I know what the fuck I'm talking about.

I loved kaiju as a kid but hadn't purchased any as an adult collector. It liked it when I saw it but I didn't have my bearings yet. Got into vinyl via Muttpop when they launched, but within three months was looking to the east thanks to some kaiju threads at "the other toy board" and also because I'd bought a Bwana Steven from Super7. Someone posted a photo of some Gargamel toys ... the then-new Smogon sculpt just blew me away. Love at first sight. I followed my nose to Kaiju-Taro where this Dream Rocket beauty was just sitting there unsold. It reminded me of the kaiju movies I loved as a boy so on a whim I shelled out. The moment I pulled it from the box, saw the beauty of the sculpt, smelled that J-vinyl smell, I was hooked.

The M1 GID Matango was my first personal realization of what was out there and what was possible beyond the world of neo-kaiju.
Classic, minimal but still modern in it's approach. Such an awesome chunk of funk. I will never tire of looking at this sculpt.

This is my favorite Matango and probably the only one that I really want. A couple of the others are cool and all but this one takes the cake.

It's my least favorite of all of them (aside from the unpainted versions) and I'd rather have any other painted version than this one. Funny how something about this one really speaks to you but really bores me. I wonder if each version has such a span. It'd be interesting for everyone to rank them from favorite to least favorite...there are some that I can't imagine being anyones "least favorite".

I can understand your take on this one and how it can bore you. Especially when some of the others have beautiful paint schemes/combinations. It that regards, yes, this particular one is pale in comparison. Maybe it's because I'm a sucker for glow, or maybe it's because I enjoy the subtle paint. That's what makes collecting fun, there's something for everyone. It would be interesting to see everyone's rank.
