Does anybody know of any other good stores, book stores, record stores in the city...?

You might want to check out Domy Books. Close to downtown. They have books, art and toys. Sadly, the toys are mostly the "urban" variety, and those that are pretty commonly available. However, the stuff on the walls and the book selection is pretty cool. Zines as well. I think they are doing a bunch of alternative-to-SXSW stuff as well.

No good record stores?

We went to Domo when we were in Austin and it was cool. Not a wide selection but the art they had up while we were there was cool. We saw some interesting stuff at the gallery across the street as well. I think it was OK Mountain (is that right?).

It was also interesting to find because we had bought a Lisa Brawn print when we were in Vancouver just a couple months before heading to TX and seeing her work down there. And whenever you're own S. Congress you can always make an excuse to hit up Hey Cupcake.

The drag is pretty freaking corporate now. Domy is a good start. Waterloo records on Lamar is ok, has some vinyl. Cheapo is 1 block down that they are largely used cd store with some records. The other record store to see is End of an Ear on 1st. They are small but carry vinyl, noise, experimental, punk, jazz you name it.
On the north side of the drag you can go to Toy Joy, they do have lots of nick nacks to amuse yourself and a Japan section which oddly had some of the boxed smaller SB bees. One block away is the Spider House coffee shop, very funky atmosphere, I get there often, they do serve booze as well. There are a lot of small pizza joints on the north side of the drag, Mangia (Godzilla logo!) The Parlor and Flying Saucer

As for movies, we have the Dobie on the drag which does lots of art house stuff and Alamo Draft House where you can watch movies and eat/drink, they do server alcohol and have a line up from new movies to classic trash and splotation films.

what about book stores?

Red, how long have you lived in Austin?

Been here 10 years but I lived in San Marcos for 10 before that which as 30 min away. There are lots of book stores there are Half Price books, the flag ship is on North Lamar even a sealed section for rare books, nix the south locations. There is also BookPeople across the street from Waterloo Records and Whole Foods. On the drag there is an alternative book store that is largley conspiracy stuff if you like theories on who did 9/11 and such, don't know the name of it.
Domy of course, there a probably others I just don't know about.

Backspin Records is another out of the way record store with a nice selection.

For food, Conan's Pizza is still my favorite pizza in the city. Pacha over on Burnett is a great coffee shop and serves some excellent empanadas.

Flying Saucer has a wide selection of beers, but loses a lot of its appeal because of the location and clientele. Draught House on Medical Arts is in the middle of a neighborhood, has most microbrews on tap, and make a few of their own seasonal brews.

East Austin now has a lot more smaller, independent stores that the drag once had, but in small pockets.

I am going over in August to visit my friend for a week and he is always going on that there are so many cool places to go so I can't wait

Also, if you hit North Loop east of Lamar, there's a couple vintage shops and Monkeywrench books, which is a anti-corporate radical bookstore.
