I wasn't all that interested in this mini-series at first but after the first episode got rave reviews I checked it out. Wow, quite a spectacular production. Intense battle-action, great cinematogrphy, good acting, and intelligent multi-layered human issues. A high-class effort across the board. I thought the scene with the Japanese solider was really intense and moving (if you've seen it, you know what scene I'm talking about.)

Already addicted. Here's hoping the rest of the series meets the promise of the opener.

did I miss the first episode already? if it's anything like Band of Brothers, it should be pretty good.

Yeah, it started this past Sunday night, but you can watch the full episode online HERE. The HBO site requires registration but if you're not into that, I'm sure it's out there on the 'net in the usual sneaky places.

I like the fact that it's all based on a true book and generally historically accurate. Good show too!

I'm excited about this series too. Anyone driving down I-5 to San Diego has passed by Basilone Rd near Camp Pendleton. I always thought more Americans should know who John Basilone is.

So true...about a lot of these guys. I found out today that Basilone's home town has a yearly parade in his memory..

I was looking at the Medal Of Honor recipients web site and was surprised to see a few from my town, that I never heard of. At least name a street after one of them or something...

Watched this yesterday bit late i know was ironic they both thought of each other as savages when they were at war for obvious reasons due to propaganda.

Yeah, I think that's what the scene I'd referred to earlier was all about. The American who delivered the merciful shot did so because he knew he was looking at a man and a soldier, not the dehumanized "peril" that his fellows were toying with cruelly. America's anti-Japanese propaganda from the era has largely been swept under history's carpet.

Was a very brutal campaign with most of the fighting close quarters they captured it well in the episode. The two tied up Americans with there privates in there mouth was pretty sickening thing was that happened alot and i know of much worse that the Japanese did and the Americans likewise. I think i heard on a documentary a while back some marines used to take trophy skulls back with them and cut out the gold or silver fillings

I have it DVRd for this weekend. The easiest way to make one group of people band together to despise another group enough to go to war with, is to dehumanize them. The brutality on the battlefields of the Pacific were also touched on in "Flags of Our Fathers" and the companion "Letters From Iwo Jima". Both worthwhile watches.

Just watched it online. This is every bit as good as Band of Brothers was. Looking forward to the rest.
