I am thinking of making a luxury purchase of an iPad. Anyone on here chime in on wether its worth the dough? The marvel comics app makes me pretty happy so far

It is a great device. I haven't had this much fun with an apple product since the 1st Mac. If you spend lots of time on your computer consuming media it is worth a look.

Seriously? I've almost picked one up a few times and the no multitasking really rubs me the wrong way. I get it's not a laptop but you really like it that much eh?

I listen to loads of podcast and sound cloud stuff and play lots of simple games like plants vs zombies so it suits my lifestyle pretty well. It is great for google reader too.

The new iphone software (4.0) will have multitasking, so it is possible the ipad will too soon.

It is confirmed they are bringing OS 4.0 to the iPad in Fall 2010. Even more motivation.

This is the sole reason I want an IPad, to store and read comics on. Im all out of room for bag and board books, though I still plan to purchase indies and hard back collections like Fantagraphics or Top Shelf puts out.

I haven't purchased or read a comic on a weekly/monthly basis in years and in some ways this is also the reason I want an IPad. I just have to convince myself spending $600 to read books and comics is right and not just spending $600 on books and comics themselves.

I saw the update about multitasking coming and it's exciting. I guess it's just cool to hear more testimonials from guys here. I do a hell of a lot of podcasts, hmmmm.

I don't think that anyone should be thinking of it as a potential laptop replacement, at least not yet. That's not its purpose. For me the appeal is as a reader, not a personal computer per se. The idea of having news and magazine subscriptions without paper is cool, and I find the design and color capability much more attractive than the Kindle. I prefer "real" books (or audiobooks) to e-text, but again, magazines, manga, newspaper ... e-readers make those things less cumbersome and wasteful.

Maybe Apple hasn't done a good enough job of promoting the thing as they intended it ... an auxiliary computing device, not a computer, if that makes sense.

OS4 definitely has me more interested in the iPad.
It's already got me considering upgrading my phone to an iPhone.

We checked one out on release day last weekend and I liked it enough. We're waiting for the 3G version to come out before buying.
I will say the one thing that I didn't like for the 10 minutes I played around with it was that if I held it in one hand while using the other to navigate, it puts a bit of strain on your wrist. Maybe I'm just being a baby though.

I'll be waiting for the iphone press conference in June, but I have no doubt I'll be upgrading my current 3G to the new(est) model at that point. Multitasking will be a nice addition.

You do get used to the weight after a few days. I sweat that is why my wrist are so strong.

My youngest daughter saved up enough dough for her own computer so we spent quite a bit of time looking at netbooks. She hated the windows os (we have macs at home) and for the most part the netbooks felt pretty cheap. Ubuntu os was a consideration but I didn't want to hassle with having to patch things to work.

We hadn't even thought of the ipad because of the lack of multitasking and lack of apps for her to do her homework with. Obviously we wanted her to get the most bang for her computer dollars. Then..... "iwork" apps for $9.99. BINGO! She can save & share projects on iwork.com....BINGO again.

We opted for the smallest hard drive because the largest hard drives weren't that much bigger for the much added expense. Plus with apps like "Air video" you can stream from other computers/drives.

One feels like he/she is holding a substantially well built piece of hardware.
The experience of devouring media, typing on it, playing games, is like no other.
Well worth it imo.

I have one at work to evaluate for a larger project where we will probably purchase 30 or more of them.

I like it a lot as a "toy," but I can't see using it as a serious workhorse for most cases.

I can say that it works fantastically as a comic book reader. Once the 3G version comes out I'll be dropping some bucks on my own instead of just using the work one.

I played with one at the Apple Store today and fell in love! I want one!

Bought one today, (I am so weak when it comes to tech and peer pressure) haven't had time to really play with it as I'm heading out for the night but I did see it's synched all my iPhone apps so I guess I need to go yank most of them off of there because when you load them they get pretty blurry when you go 2x on them size wise. But I really am excited about this purchase. I blame you Pogue!!!!

There are some really sick possibilities with this thing. I signed up for Square which sends you a free credit card reader and does credit card transactions over wifi. I also scored Line 2 which is a way to make calls off my iPad. Its got a month free then its $15 a month...but you get an 800 number if you want and it forwards to your cell. Pretty dope if you ask me.

On the day it came out Abstrakt had that show at Rogue Status and was selling Art directly from their website, taking paypal on the spot. For a retail location thats not so massive i guess but for us lone wolves its a real step up from "sorry i dont have change for that...."

Any chance it will be used like a cintiq sketch pad thingy? I would be into that. Cintiq's are still around $2,000

Its got some drawing apps, as far as I know nothing that measures up to photoshop or painter tho. I have adobe ideas and w/o a stylus it seems to be pretty much MS Paint.
