Ah hardcore. One of my favorite things in life. I started going to punk/hardcore shows (punk and hardcore are the same thing to me) in the early 80s. I remember sneaking out of the second story window and riding my skateboard a couple blocks away to avoid my mom seeing me hop on the city bus and going into what were bad neighborhoods at the time to see shows. I'm still go to shows regularly and I still feel a strong connection to it. I'm also still edge but I've never really liked straight edge bands.

anybody remember Reason to Believe? Now, there's a posi-band I liked!

They turned into a really bad band, I can't recall the name though.

I love Into the Moat. There first EP, "Means by Which the End is Justified" kills it. Very much in the vein of DEP in certain parts... Very techy!

Can't say I dig much punk rock these days, altho the most punk rock band I've seen in ages is Sweden's Ark - they sure don't sound punk, but they fuck with gender stereotypes and suggest we be ourselves, whatever that maybe - so whats more punk than that?

WHen I was a kid: brothers deep purple records, Slade, Sweet, glam rock....then ABBA, ELO untikl the metal yrs:

First shows: 1981: Rainbow and Rose Tattoo, then Saxon. and AC/DC - I come from the North of England - so metal was a staple in the late 70's/early 80's.

Enjoyed some of the buzzy early OI singles around 79,80,81, like Anti-Pasti, Peter and the Test Tube Babies, Vice Squad, Expelled - but hated the Explouted after reading Watties racially charged rantings in Maximum Rock n Roll (or something like that) years later.

Then got into goth, also a Northern movement, with locals like Sisters of Mercy and the March Violets.

Punk shows, well I liked the Stupids cos they had a sense of humor and skated, Naked Raygun cos of the melodic quality, the Hard-Ons cos they were rude, funny and had long hair. Oh yeah, SNUFF ruled, again sense of humor and velocity. At the same time I was also digging lots of indie bands, and being a closet metal fan too. Checked out lots of the stright edge bands when I was skating a lot, cos lots of my skate buddies were listening too em - YOT, Gorilla Biscuits etc.... Never really loved em tho.

Then Mudhoney, Nirvana, SOundgarden, Tad et al filtered into London 88/89 - and that was it for me. Nirvana were my gods, mainly because they took fuzzed up shitty noise and applied a great pop sensibility, plus they were fucking outsiders, not jocks, and Kurt was in pain. Total relatability for me. Man, the first basement show I saw with them was fucking crazy, awesome, fun and kind of life changing! Opening for Tad, and stealing the show!

Only thing I have never really got into is Hip Hop, but that is mainly because of lyrical content. I never wanted to call anyone a I FART A LOT or a whore, and couldn't reconcile pursuit of money as something I wanted to hear about. Consequently I veered towards De La Soul, and Tribe Called Quest - but always felt the live shows came up short.

These days I still love indie rock like the Editors and stuff, but will happilly listen to old skool rock (Maiden etc...), LOVE new skool old skool rock (Mars Volta, Darkness, WOlfMother), electronica and weirder stuff like Test Icicles, Adam Green and the weirdly beautiful Opeth.

Wow this thread totally brings back memories.

I started going to shows around 89/90 and saw some seriously sick shows. A lot were metal/deathmetal, but also quite a few hardcore shows. I've seen Agnostic Front, Fugazi, ST, saw Pantera on their first tour for Cowboys from Hell which was nuts, tons of local Boston hardcore, Burn, ummm..so so many back then. There was a local band called Maelstrom who were on TAANG and I really dug them. I was also a Bosstones groupie from about 1990 when I saw them open for a reggae band, up until 1994. I've seen them over 50 times, which I'm not sure if I should admit or not

I noticed that you mentioned Slapshot DB. They were really great at first, but progressively got much much worse. Sadly, one of the founding members passed away a few years back, and I still see Jack (choke) around town once in a while. He made quite a bit on royalties (at least for a local hardcore band) when the Bosstones covered one of their songs.

Did you ever see the Sisters of Mercy live? I would like to hear about that. Wayne Hussey is a unique guitarest and some of the early Mission stuff is memorable...

Back in the day, the only music mag I would actually buy was Kerrang and it always had a good mix of stuff.

I saw Soundgarden once, they played between Faith No More and Voivod. It was a great show indeed...hot as hell!

When I was 16 I sat outside a Nirvana show because it was 18 + and I couldn't get in...I was really bummed out about not getting in, but still happy to hear them somewhat live through the wall

Never did see the Sisters, but did catch KMFDM a few times, as well as Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb. One KMFDM show I went to, everyone was stomping their boots on the floor, and the manager came out between songs and told us to stop stomping because the ceiling below was beginning to cave in.

The 90s were such a great time for music...

dude, you might have me beat. from the time devil's night out came out until somewhere around the time question the answers dropped, i must've seen the bosstones between 40 and 50 times. easily one of the greatest live bands ever.

Hehe..yeah I still have a bunch of memorabilia from that time frame too...i had Devil's Night Out on swirled vinyl...good stuff man.
The first show I went to, they opened for this reggae band, and half the band never showed up. The club had maybe 20 people in it when they played, and I knew right then that they would be big at some point.

The best Bosstones moment I had was a record release for More Noise... and they had Everlast from House of Pain just hanging out. I had got up on stage to jump back into the crowd and the song stopped short. Everlast sees me, picks me up and just tosses me out into the crowd..so funny. I'm a little guy for the most part anyway, but he picked me up like I was a toy and just chucked me with no strain at all.

i lost interest after Dont know how to party came out. They played a bigger club here and it was all meatheads beating each other, and me, up.

Oddly enough, i saw Dicky here in the city about two years ago and he was carrying a little lap dog and all of these bags from armani...times definitely change!

i went to school in Syracuse NY in the early 90's so there was really no way to avoid that stuff. (although hardcore was never my thing)

yeah, they tanked majorly by the end but imo, they were passionate and made some great music. perhaps just not for people that prefer to punch each other.

Did I see em live? Fuck yeah! Tad and Nirvana in the basement of SOAS in London, Mudhoney, Tad and Nirvana (always bottom of the bill!) at Lamefest UK at the Astoria, and Soundgarden I missed at their SOAS show, but saw em a few times later at fests and at the Aragorn Ballroom in Chicago. Saw Nirvana a few more times, Mudhoney lots of times, first was when they opened for Sonic Youth at the Kilburn National. Tad were only OK in my book.

Lamefest was awesome, great tee shirt from the event, and my big regret was not going back stage to interview all three bands for my college show - my co-host wasn't there, and I felt a bit nervous being such a big fan.

First Sisters show I saw was at the Lyceum in 1984 - considering they came from 18 miles from my hometown I never saw em there, cos at teh time it was all about the metal. Saw the Mission about 5 or 6 times, altho Wayne Hussey was a bit of a joke later on. Ghostdance, March Violets, Lords of the New Church, Flesh for Lulu, Alien Sex Fiend, All About Eve, Balaam and the Angel, Fields of the Nephilim - saw em all quite a few times.

I loved Kerrang too - it srated out hard rock, but then some of the journalists covered goth and alt too. I read em all tho, SOunds, Melody Maker and NME. Great times, I lived for Tuesday night when the weekly music press would drop in London town, and the planning for next weeks gigs would begin!

its more recent but would xbxrx and arab on radar be considered hard core and the west coast band the locust

Got into HxC via Metallica on the Ride the Lightning UK tour in 84.They were wearing HxC shirts and did a few covers.

Started buying MRR and reading Puszone in Thrasher.First board was Alva.

First zine I did was in 1985.

Through trading, gigs etc I became friends with members of Carcass, Napalm Death, Heresy etc

Heresy were my favourite.Steve the drummer was faster than the Siege drummer from Boston.At the time who could play the fastest was the most important thing in the world.Through Heresy I got to meet John Peel.A lovely man.

By the late Eighties Id crossed over into rave.Ragga Twins and the Prodigy played at my first outdoor rave ending all my HxC credentials..

i too crossed over to raves (slightly later though,,1992),,,after a slight retrospective psychedelic music phase (think it was the heavyduty liquid acid my deadhead friends plied onto my skate crew around 1987-88 which rattled my music listening)

before then,,,it was only hardcore & hip-hop shows from 1982-87,,,basically i attended any all-ages show from philly to nyc,,,,most notably all-ages sunday matinees at cbgb & city gardens every weekend....WAY too many bands seen to mention!!!!

think i was the only kid who went to these shows rocking a kangol & adidas tracksuit,,,,,hee heehhehehee...always been a square peg

probably the most insane show i ever saw was bad brains & butthole surfers on the i against i tour at the ritz hotel in nyc (now webster hall),,,,wtf!!! it was a life changing experience

Being based in the good old UK the hardcore scene has had some very strange times over the years. For me I have been going to shows and playing in bands for 20 years now and yeah I still call myself SXE and I still X'up as it seems to fuck the x-edge kids of loads, so its kind of funny

the whole scene here is kind of boring most the time as gigs are usually the same sounding band on the bill where as I have always tried to mix things up a little and prefer to play with any hardcore band no matter what they sound like as long as they are coming form the same place i am

At the minute its full of kids covered in tattoos and they all seem to have really expensive equipment and all have nice cars and accents and I know when we play we are still borrowing stuff and all dont look like we are sponsored by Vans

Sounds like I am moaning but i fucking love HC and what i have done with it over the years, highlight are having Subzero stay over (I always put the shows on in Newcastle/Durham and everyone stayed at my house) and in the morning the dudes where hoovering and dancing with my mam to the Everly Brothers.

So many class funny things happend back then and still do
