Your post title, stating that you have "definitely put in my time!" makes you a target because your pictures say otherwise. Why not sit back and lurk for a couple months and see how things are done before you try again? Given how this board used to be, I'm surprised you have gotten off so lightly so far.

what is the difference between a mummy boy and a skumbo except the mummy boy was made in japan?

The point you were making is well-taken but I'm going to answer this anyway, just to play Devil's Advocate.

I think that difference that you've already stated is considerable! The vinyl used for Mummy Boys is Japanese ... most of us would agree that it's of higher quality and a nicer feel than the plastic-y Chinese vinyls used for KR toys. Although this is admittedly a subjective judgement, I think it's fair to say that Mummy Boy is a much better designed toy, conceptually and aesthetically. Skumbo fails to convey what it's trying so hard to convey. It just looks pathetic, as even its designer eventually came to admit (to his credit.) By contrast, if you've seen that obscure Japanese vinyl that was apparently the inspiration for MB's bone-arm and know about the Bob's Big Boy mascot, you "get" how the figure speaks directly to the Jap-Am aspect of "neo kaiju" and of Super7 itself.

Is Mummy Boy "kaiju?" No, technically it's not at all. However it does fit into the general postmodern reality of the "neo kaiju" world.

Literally speaking, fight figures aren't kaiju either, even though some have their inspiration in kaiju figures (e.g. Gargamess has Gomess' face.) I know the phrase "neo kaiju" irks some, but it acknowledges that in the present day Japanese vinyl monster toys are made primarily for a collectors' market, not a children's market with direct connections to movies and TV series, as in the 60s/70s/80s. So yeah, definitions are used loosely sometimes. It's all about context and recognizing context.

I do wish there were more oldskool kaiju lovers but what can you do? The nostalgia aspect just isn't there for people who are more or less under the age of 35 who didn't grow up watching Ultraman or Raideen or what have you.

The OP to this thread appears to have taken the allergic reactions to his photos well. They are definitely out of character for the board despite the appearance of a few toys but you never know ... when this happens, I always think of a certain board member who used to hate kaiju and neo-kaiju and dissed it on the KR board, but later became one of the biggest collectors of Blobpus, ever, and developed a true love for oldskool kaiju. A little time spent at this board may cure some n00bs of their erroneous ways!

It's a kinda rough pic, but two sets of originals by pro skateboarder Lance Mountain. Acrylic on ceramic tiles, they are supposed to represent the deep end and shallow end of a pool.

Lance is the best ever, so I have no problem with your pics, but SB is all about JP vinyl, not that other crap..

Trust me, at this point, I would love to amend that title to say " . . . I have put in my time collecting all sorts of things that I've paid to much money for simply because I find them fascinating, well-designed, or otherwise visually appealing." Unfortunately, I don't know if that's entirely possible.

I appreciate the passion you all have for Japanese vinyl, and I've learned MUCH in the 24 hours since my first post. I think Dean most eloquently outlined what set most people off, and for that I do apologize for not knowing all the subtle nuances.

Ultimately, we are all having this conversation because of our passions for what we love. I'm coming to your world from a slightly different perspective . . . I am just enamored with, to paraphrase Old Gregg, "all things that are good."

I'm here because my own collection has started to veer into more japanese vinyl, thanks in large part to Super7 and Brian Flynn. I'm 35, old enough to remember watching overdubbed Japanese cartoons in the morning, able to describe them, but admittedly can't remember what they were.

So I've taken lots of notes today, and I appreciate that. Thanks.

Honestly most of the stuff you collect..I really don't like...actually can't stand.. But you do have a passion for vinyl and toys...which is awesome because you are in the right place.
Anyway..a lot of people on here actually do like western vinyl. They just don't post it here...sort of like posting baseball info on a soccer forum.

Of all the new obnoxious people who have joined lately you seem to have a good attitude about this stuff. Stick around..read the faq section and enjoy. It's a great forum.

Just collect what you want and post pics of what is relevant to this Board. Honestly, don't let people's opinions "peer pressure" you out of collecting things you like. Some people here take the Board "ideals" a little too far.

I've been a full-bore collector (at least calling myself that) for over 10 years, so yeah, I pretty much know what I like. However, I'll just be for smarter about what I post on here! Thanks!

Why don't you see if you can post this pic in 2 or 3 other threads too. I don't think you've used it enough.
PS- wtf are you talking about "we call it REAL collecting"? How long have you been here?

That's correct, I actually liked skumbo when it came out and I hate the mummy boy. :)

My point was this board isn't what it used to be, s7 isn't what it used to be, and hazing all the newbies by people that weren't even around when this board started as an escape from the KR board (even) is annoying at best.

Sorry I don't have royalty like you to be an asshole. You should go after all the other people who are giving this guy a hard time about his collection. Oh I forgot I'm new. What do I know about collecting.

I think peeps should be able to disagree without the name calling.

Dean, your post is good but I have to add that Bandai continues to make 6-inch vinyl Ultraman figures and kaiju of current shows as toys for children.

Though, arguably, most neo-kaiju are for a collector's market.

Hey guys sorry about all the negativity. I don't like people that get in your face when you give someone a hard time.
I was bombarded with foul language and very rude boardies when I first signed up on here. To this day it still goes on.
I certainly am not royalty but feel I can speak up like everyone on here. I support this field 100% and spend tons of cash.
Please cut us newbies some slack. or not..........haha

melek_taus - sorry about the name calling I was simply going by my natural instinct of people that get in my business for no reason. Your a better person than I am since your royalty.

No need for apologies. Internet name calling doesn't phase me.

And it has nothing to do with being better than you. Honestly, I have been pretty aggravated lately with all the new people posting the same picture in 3 different threads, posting "PM'd you" and trying to give other new guys advice like "Collect REAL toys dude. We keep it real here." Usually, I try not to give people a hard time. But it has been getting hard lately. I did actually look into your post history- to see what kind of member you are. PM posts, annoying posts and douchyness galore. So I had no problem calling you out. If people here are still calling you out all the time, maybe that should put a red flag up for you to realize you are doing something wrong.

That's all.
