 New Amanda Visell "kaiju" Figure
**Note** It has been confirmed by Amanda that the term was being used in a joking way I'm not even a true kaiju collector and this confuses even me to see it called kaiju: http://blog.neonmonster.com/gallery/kai ... style-now/

Re: Amanda Visell "Kaiju" - WTF?
"This is my sort of kaiju, which seems to be monsters figures made by boys. This is a girl made by a girl, so twice as scary." Im not hating on Amanda or the design, but I think she missed out on the kaiju-ness and has simply created a girl in a bag. I dunno...Im still learning about kaiju toys, so I hope im not stepping on any tails with my comment. I just dont see kaiju represented well here.

I find it funny, I don't think Amanda Visell meant it to be taken seriously as kaiju.

Re: Amanda Visell "Kaiju" - WTF?
I don't blame Amanda Visell, but I do blame everybody who showed off their Secret Base and Real Head fight figures and called them "kaiju."
KAIJU DON'T WEAR PANTS. (or other clothing)

it's in a bag with a header card stapled to it... therefore it must be kaiju

But there wasn't any real indication to toungue-in-cheek or humor about it. Sorta like when the October Toys folks did their resin monster Gwins a few years back and called them "Bandwa" as a purposeful joke to the "kaiju bandwagon" term that was being thrown around due to the Kaiju for Grown-ups line, it was put out with a clear intent of joking. Like I said, I'm don't consider myself a kaiju collector, so I'm mostly curious what people who do consider themselves kaiju collectors think about this.

I don't collect Kaiju either but I agree with animator and think Amanda meant this to be tongue and cheek. Not kaiju for reals...

I'm actually starting to see this as a bit of a parody on "kaiju culture" now, too. Yes, it could have been explained better, but most of the transmissions from Switcheroo lack the communication skills they make up for with hands-on toy-making. Also, sarcasm doesn't translate on the web, as we all know. Which may explain why I'm missing the point of the purple quote below.

Re: Amanda Visell "Kaiju" - WTF?
We all know 'kaiju' term has been widely miss used and 'cannibalized'. I certainly wouldn't blame her on that, but all of us toy collectors. Know it seems that most of the people that really know what kaiju means are people that actually collect kaiju. I do consider myself to collect kaiju, but only because I collect a lot of stuff, not only Japanese monsters (and certainly no expert in the Kaiju subject). Amanda Vissell doesn't bother me, or her toy, or her design. But I really wonder why they decided to use the term for it. May be there's a growing marker for that 'kaiju' which is really undefined and that seems may include a broad universe of toys. I'm guessing it's all about the hype, which again here is not even intended for Kaiju collectors.

From her perspective, why not try and capitalize on a "hot" (or, perceived "hot") movement/market in any way possible? You can fault her for the design or execution, but not the $$$ intent. It looks like a sound business decision.

Is it because it's in a bag they thought it could be funny to call it kaiju with Tongue lodged in cheek? Because again it fails on that score too. So either the concept is flawed as a joke or the way it's been written or indeed both. All in all a bit weird. Shame because at least she does her own stuff in her own way rather than rely on western companies to make all her stuff.

So either the concept is flawed as a joke or the way it's been written or indeed both. All in all a bit weird. Shame because at least she does her own stuff in her own way rather than rely on western companies to make all her stuff. Well: two ways to look at it really. 1) It's a parody/send-up of kaiju culture being realized as bag a toy w/ a header card and call it kaiju: voila! If it is a parody, like I said, it's not verbalized well, but if you've read any of the Switcheroo newsletters, grammar et al is not exactly their forte. Or is it 2) Marketing and bandwagoning? I sort of doubt it. You gotta figure that the Switcheroo girls and the GrassHut boys crosspollinate ideas a lot. It probably either came up as a joke or a real idea for Amanda to do some sort of kaiju piece. Visell's figures sell pretty well. She does her big editions with KR and releases her own experiments through Switcheroo--she doesn't really need to "try" to get into this scene to sell her toys. I'm not going to buy the piece, nor do I think it fits the dictionary definition of kaiju, but she's making toys with her own hands. What are the rest of you critics doing?

Certainly not little dresses. From the description it seems like they are trying to justify it as Kaiju because it's a humanoid girl with fangs. But those aren't fangs. It appears to be her collar.

I'll ask her her take on this on Friday when she drops by my old store for a signing. (Ok, totally shameless plug.)
I actually really like it and hope she brings some! Not that I can afford it...
