Re: Amanda Visell "Kaiju" - WTF?
Nope. You can see her mouth just below her nose. And the "fangs" are below her head. Looks like a collar for sure.

Re: Amanda Visell "Kaiju" - WTF?
melek_taus wrote: From the description it seems like they are trying to justify it as Kaiju because it's a humanoid girl with fangs. But those aren't fangs. It appears to be her collar. The entire sentence reads: "It’s an American-made humanoid resin female figure with fangs. It doesn’t exactly fit the formal definition of kaiju." It's kind of the opposite of justifying it--kaiju has a pretty narrow definition, and I'm actually (in the next few hours) about to post something on the blog about that definition as part of an interview with Mark Nagata. As for the fangs, I may be wrong: it does look like a collar to me now, too. Because Visell has done other vampire-type toys, I think my mind filled in the blank. I've sent her a message to ask her. If they're not fangs, it's even less monstrous, therefore even less "kaiju" and probably, therefore even more of a "joke".

It's pretty clear from the header art. ^^^ I wasn't trying to be mean, or bash it. Just saying. There is nothing monster about this. It's just a toy girl. Oh well.

Re: Amanda Visell "Kaiju" - WTF?
Not only does it not fit the "formal" definition of kaiju, it doesn't fit any definition of kaiju. Unless she borrowed a dictionary from that guy who made "Old Skool Kaiju"...and if that's the case that must have been a really bad bootleg dictionary. A bag/header has nothing to do with "kaiju". Sure, that's how a lot are packaged. But there are a lot of other toys that are packaged that way too.

I'm sure Amanda has alredy seen this. If you happen to know Amanda personally you know she's tongue in cheek even when she's not (that only makes sense if you know what I'm talking about). She has real kaiju in her collection so she gets it.

Re: Amanda Visell "Kaiju" - WTF?
Looks good to me. Seems like she just wanted to do kind of a self portrait with a little bit of kaiju style to make it fun (the scales on the dress and some creative painting). There used to be some pretty heated arguments about the use of the word but I'm glad that it's calmed down a little. I saw this the other day and it made me laugh, if this can be called kaiju then pretty much anything can: (Japanese title is Kaiju‐Tachi no Iru Tokoro)

That's too bad she hasn't been received well on this board, though I guess her work is not really on topic here I suppose. I'm a married man, but this board sure could use a dose of estrogen. Wolfchild is having to really bring it!

I don't see why it shouldn't be the place. There is stuff in the American Idols and Resinators forums that gets a pass that I find way more offensive than any of Amanda's work.

Re: Amanda Visell "Kaiju" - WTF?
Those are not fangs. They are the pointed collar of her dress. This is not a monster. It’s just a girl. It looks like something you could buy at Target for a girl to put on her desk for maybe $10. AV has created so many wondrous amazing creatures! What’s up with this? It’s just plain boring. I do have 3 pieces by her that are awesome.

Re: Amanda Visell "Kaiju" - WTF?
There are many annoying aspects of twitter, but one of the great things is you can just ask someone a question and get an answer pretty quickly. I asked Amanda to clarify whether the figure had fangs or a collar. The verdict? Quote: ha, yeah I just read that, that's her dress, and not so much kaiju. Though she is hiding something dangerous behind her. http://twitter.com/amandavisell/statuses/16730108263

Re: Amanda Visell "Kaiju" - WTF?
Wait, I'm in charge of bringing estrogen to this board? We are in serious trouble. And yeah, just saw the reply on Twitter, glad to see that it was definitely tongue in cheek and not serious. Sadly, my only personal experience with Amanda would actually not lead me to believe there was anything humorously tongue-in-cheek about her, so that probably weighed on my viewing of the figure. But I am glad to hear that others here have better experiences with her and were able to see the joke where I wasn't. I'll modify the thread title to reflect that as well.

If you can get Amanda to tweet, "kaiju don't wear pants," I'll award a special gold star to you.

Yeah, I think most people have broader interests than just "kaiju" or whatever, and there are plenty of people on this board that like her work. My impression was that people don't like "artists" who only post when they have something to sell and that's why she wasn't received well. Though certainly some people get more slack than others for whatever reasons. (And "artists" is in quotations not because I don't think AV is an artist, but to be all-inclusive of the different types of people who might just use SB as a marketing platform.)

I wish my first resin sold for $150. I think it's a pretty cool figure, it would look good with the new monstre hero ape lady

Re: New Amanda Visell "kaiju" Figure
There used to be a decent about of ladies on the board. They left for different reasons. There are more than a few now, I just don't think most of you realize they are ladies based on their board names.
Asking for more estrogen on a toy msgboard is like asking for a Minor Threat reunion. It's not happening.
